Watermarks in the work of the Printer of the Prague Bible
Kafka, Andrej ; Voit, Petr (advisor) ; Boldan, Kamil (referee)
The aim of this thesis was a detailed research of watermarks in the work of the Printer of the Prague Bible. The watermarks should serve as a contribution to a future catalogue of watermarks in Bohemian prints. The source of the watermarks are folio formats of titles printed by the Printer of the Prague Bible, which are in the possession of the National Library in Prague. The theoretical part of the thesis outlines the history of European papermaking and basic information about the reasons for the introduction of watermarks into papermaking. It also briefly introduces filigranology as a discipline and its state in the Czech Republic, and gives a number of examples of practical applications of filigranology. It also describes the methods of visualising watermarks, the rules for recording them and the reasons that led to the selection of the sample for the survey. The watermarks were recorded using the tracing paper method. While this method did not allow us to clearly identify absolutely all close variants, it served well to identify sheets suitable for further work with a more precise visualization method. As part of the survey, at least two copies of each title were compared and the distribution of watermarks in each copy was graphically represented in summary tables. The relatively low diversity...
Documentation of the use of personified virtues ornamental bands in the prague printing offices of the time of Emperor Rudolf II
Borovková, Veronika ; Vlachová, Jana (advisor) ; Voit, Petr (referee)
The bachelor's thesis on the motif of allegories of Christian virtues in the form of female figures of Faith and Hope, Love and Justice, Wisdom and Temperance, Courage and Patience presents a mapping of the occurrence of the theme on ornamental bands in printing oficces in the time before the battle of Bílá hora. It is based on the premise of a traceable pioneering line of ornamental bands with the Virtues motif from the workshop of Michael Peterle Sr, inspired by the production of Melantrich and other collaborators and followers. It represents the popularity of the motif in art in general, with a subsequent narrowing to old prints and consideration of manuscript production. Includes a broader historical perspective and period context. The intention of the work was to evaluate the originality and artistic treatment of ornamental bounds and to contribute to a closer understanding of the transfer of decorative elements used by Czech early modern printers. The thesis is mainly prepared by the method of creative compilation of knowledge obtained through the study of relevant sources and historical analysis. To map the occurrence of ornamental bands with allegories I used the method of comparative analysis based on database searches. By comparing the traced ornamental bands, the starting position of...

Rubbings of examined books were created during the writing. The research showed that the reformational iconography preserved on mentioned types of liturgical books only in one rare case.
Utraquist oriented humanism in Bohemia exemplified in the literary works of Mikuláš Konáč z Hodiškova
Fernández Couceiro, Eduardo ; Voit, Petr (advisor) ; Nejedlý, Martin (referee)
Works of literary history dealing with 16th-century Czech literature often speak of the contrast between Latin (aristocratic, Catholic) and national (burgher, Utraquist) humanism. Representatives of these trends fall into two groups which are presented as antithetical, independent and closed, and literary evaluations often favour national humanism for extra-literary (religious, social, linguistic) reasons. In the first part of this paper, we indicate that this contrast does not hold valid completely because, on the one hand, there are numerous cases which may not be easily assimilated within this scheme and, on the other, Czech nationalist humanism depends entirely on Latin models (ancient, medieval, Renaissance). In the second part, we focus on the work of Mikuláš Konáč of Hodíškov, considered to be a typical representative of national humanism. An analysis of his literary and printing work reveals several aspects which lie outside the conventional framework of national humanism. In his literary works (chiefly translations), Konáč draws not from the national (Hussite) tradition, but from international European Latin scholarship. As regards his religious beliefs, he appeared to be a conservative Utraquist, but his attitudes changed with time: an overall tolerance of and sympathy towards the Unity of the...
