Figurative Names in Contemporary Czech Christian Literature for Children

This bachelor's dissertation analyzes the lexical content of contemporary Christian literary works for children. It looks at a corpus of prose story books (original stories, rather than re-told Bible stories), intended for children aged 6-12 that were published between 1990 and 2017. It focuses on figurative names (metaphors and symbols), which are used to help children understand basic Christian truths and terminology (heaven/paradise and eternal life, hell, satan, the Bible) and the persons of the Holy Trinity. It also examines the most frequently used metaphors (contrasting terms such as light and darkness, cleanliness and dirt, wide and narrow pathways) and the symbolism of colour. The metaphors are assessed from the perspective of their origin (in particular to what extent they are rooted in the Bible) and on the basis of their cognitive function, judged from their use within the book's content. The work maps the market for this type of literature and provides an annotated list of existing titles.
