In the theoretical part there is a description of the historical development of the profession of midwife, midwifery as a scientific discipline, current status of midwife where the system of education and competence of midwife is mentioned. In the practical part there is a description of quantitative research. Data were collected by using a questionnaire. Data processing together with graphic and tabular evaluation was performed by using Microsoft Excel. Data were statistically evaluated by using tables and chi square test. Graphs, which show the answers of the respondents, were created from the processed answers. The research group consisted of 139 respondents aged 18-65 years. The aim of the bachelor thesis was to find out the public´s knowledge about the profession of midwife. Two hypothesis were determined for the practical part. The first hypothesis was: Public awareness of midwife´s competences varies depending on gender. This hypothesis was not confirmed. The second hypothesis was: Public awareness of midwife´s competences varies depending on age. This hypothesis was not confirmed either. The research has shown that the public is not sufficiently informed about this profession. Respondents view the midwife as a person working in a hospital where she takes care of a woman during childbirth but they do not perceive her competences associated with the care of a gynaecologically ill woman. Respondents did not know that midwife´s competences include care for the newborn and its first treatment after birth in the delivery room. Respondents stated in the research midwifery as a medical branch, then they mentioned that midwife can prescribe medicines. Respondents know that midwife can run a prenatal clinic as well as exercises and prenatal courses for pregnant women. The results of this bachelor thesis can be used in professional seminars for midwives.
