Some of the macroeconomic effects of labour migration following the Czech Republic joining the European Union
Vystrčil, Tomáš ; Černý, Michal (advisor) ; Tomanová, Petra (referee)
When the Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004, the number of foreign nationals working in the Czech Republic quickly grew, along with their impact on the national economy. The aim of this thesis is to analyse and compare the effects of foreign and native labour on the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Czech Republic. Then we shall compare the effects of immigrant labour originating from the EU with other foreign nationals. Using the ordinary least squares method to analyse time series data, it is shown that labour migration has a positive effect on the GDP growth and the results are statistically significant. It seems that labour from the EU is the most productive group, followed by the foreign labour from other countries.
Macroeconomic Analysis with Spatial Econometric Approaches
Macková, Simona ; Formánek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tomanová, Petra (referee)
Spatial econometrics can bring a useful approach to macroeconomic analysis of regional data. This thesis delineates suitable cross-section data models regarding their geographical location. Neighbourhood relation is used for the analysis. The relation of neighbourhood among the regions is expressed using spatial weight matrix. We focus on spatial autocorrelation tests and introduce processes of finding a suitable spatial model. Further, we describe regression coefficients estimates and estimates of spatial dependence coefficients, especially method of maximum likelihood estimates. Besides illustrative examples we apply chosen basic spatial models on real macroeconomic data. We examine how they describe relation between household incomes, GDP and unemployment rate in western Europe. Results are compared with a linear regression model.
Religious socialism and Its Czech reception
Tomanová, Petra ; Doubek, Vratislav (advisor) ; Pavlincová, Helena (referee)
This thesis is based on the premise that the function of the Church in public space cannot be reduced to providing religious service to their members, therefore the goal of this paper was to inspect their public activity. From the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century Christian Churches begin to take part in the events round them - the Roman-catholic Church has come with its own social theory (represented by the encyclic Rerum novarum) and has started founding its own confessional polical parties. Numerous reformation Churches based on Calvin's teachings have started their public activities with self-criticism on the one side, and with demands on fundamental changes of the existing order on the other side. The theme of the first chapter was to examine the differences between these two kinds of Western Christiandom in a point of view whether or not they had affected their approach to social problems. The second chapter is focused on the life and work of Hermann Kutter and Leonhard Ragaz, for it was these two men who co-founded the international oecumenical politico-religious movement which chose for itself the title "Religious Socialism" in order to differ from Roman-catholic "Christian Social Theory". The aim of the movement was to emphasize the righteousness of the claims of...
Měření finanční nákazy pomocí CAViaR metody: Aplikace na Evropu
Tomanová, Petra ; Zouhar, Jan (advisor) ; Formánek, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to measure changes in dependencies among returns on equity indices for European countries in tranquil periods against crisis periods and to investigate their asymmetries in the lower and upper tail of their distributions. The approach is based on a conditional probability that a random variable is lower than a given quantile while other random variables are also lower than their corresponding quantiles. Time-varying conditional quantiles are modeled by the Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk via Regression Quantiles (CAViaR) method. In addition to the univariate conditional autoregressive models, the vector autoregressive extension is considered. In the second step, the conditional probability is estimated through the OLS regression. Moreover, the model which allows the distribution of returns in one country to lead or to lag the distribution of returns in another country, is defined and applied on European equity returns. Finally, the model measuring dependencies among more than two return series is derived and the relating dimensionality problems are discussed. The results document a significant increase in European equity return comovements in bear markets during the crisis in 1990s and 2000s. The explicit controlling for the high volatility days does not appear to have an impact on the main findings. For the comparison purposes, the results for Latin American countries are reported as well.
The Czech Republic and the Constitution for Europe
TOMANOVÁ, Petra
English Annotation The object of this thesis is the characterisation of the proposed European Constitution and its functioning and influence within the Czech Republic. This thesis gives an account of the European Constitution including the main ideas and aspirations about the future of Europe by the Convention that drew up this resolution. The problematic points of the Constitution are described within. The principal point of this thesis is to create a general insight into the discussion surrounding and the possibilities of ratification as well as the attitudes of particular state officials in the Czech Republic. The Proposed European Constitution is uniquely positioned in the history of European Union together with all of Europe by way of suggesting a common constitution for all member countries. Throughout the history of Europe the concept of treaties has been explored and implemented. Congruent with this is the proposed European Treaty, which was to be ratified in 2003, and is the result of an established unification policy concerning Europe. The Czech Republic has been a member of this European Union since 1st May 2004. The aim of this thesis is therefore to observe the process and response regarding the possibility of the ratification of a common European Constitution in the Czech Republic. Taking into account that the Czech Republic is a very politically disparate country, it was interesting to observe the response to ratification of the Constitution. The main figure that attracted attention not only by Czechs but by Europeans everywhere is President Václav Klaus who was and remains to be an influential opponent of any kind of a common European Constitution.
