Children with challenging behaviour as a source of burden for primary school teachers

The thesis deals with the challenging behaviour of children from the perspective of first grade primary school teachers who perceive this behaviour as a significant source of professional stress. The aim of the thesis is to map which forms of children' behaviour are identified by teachers as the most burdensome, what they experience in relation to exposure to challenging behaviour and what teachers lack in order to manage the professional burden better. The theoretical section provides background information on the emotions and stress experienced by teachers. The next part is devoted to the concept of challenging behaviour of children, its forms and manifestations. Finally, the area of social support for teachers is discussed and the importance of mental hygiene is mentioned. The aim of the practical part is to trace, through a qualitative investigation by analysing semi- structured interviews, which children' behaviour is identified as challenging by the first-grade teachers at the selected school, what they experience in connection with exposure to this behaviour, what support they receive from the school management and the school counselling centre, or what additional support they would welcome and what they themselves do to be able to carry out their work with less professional burden.
