The "World Order" in Gustav Herling-Grudziński's short stories
Petránková, Michaela ; Poslední, Petr (advisor) ; Benešová, Michala (referee)
v anglickém jazyce Reading a story typically involves a question where did this story come into being, where it arose from. Reading Gustaw Herling-Grudziński's short stories involve the answer as well. His texts after a novel A world Apart imply well-founded world order, which suggests, that stories exists in variations yet for centuries in old chronicles, files on historical events, commentaries written by historian and in famous European paintings and other works of arts. The plausibility of such stories is supported by their incessant repeating. Never can they be forgotten inasmuch as they can emerge anytime in present events, most often in the place where the previous story took place. In Gustaw Heling-Grudziński's short stories even the seemingly real place is never the purely mimetic image of a real place. Described landscape combines a representation of real European places with the imaginary space of fiction. In Herling-Grudziński's short stories it means that places have their own inner memory reflected in genius loci. As the narrator perceives them not by vision alone, but also by smell, sound, and so on and they interface with other spaces in literature as well, may such a narrative present itself as a projection of the memory engaged to a particular place. It may fully comprise of...

The second part is aimed at the situation of described authors mainly in the year 1954, function of peritexts of both author and editor and the problem of two versions of the Leopold Tyrmand's diary. The last part is focused on analysis of chosen diaries, the construction of the text, the view of the hero and the reflection of the text itself. The thesis is based on comparison of three various diaries and tries to reveal different approaches to the genre diary.
View of rurality in Czech and Polish prose in 1960s (interpretation of selected literary works)
Bramborová, Marcela ; Poslední, Petr (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee)
The subject matter of this thesis is the presentation of a typology of rural imagery based on a thematic and interpretative analysis of Polish and Czech literary texts from the 1960s with respect to the ongoing changes made to the original romantic-realist concept of the rural novel. The analysis of specific literary works (Sekyra by Ludvík Vaculík, Smuteční slavnost by Eva Kantůrková, and Čas kopřiv by Josef Knap from Czech literature, and, from Polish literature, Opadaný sad by Wiesław Myśliwski, the novels Na slunci by Julian Kawalec and … až budeš králem, až budeš katem… by Tadeusz Nowak) permits us to create a basic register of elements of rural narrativity which, however, Czech and Polish literatures have different perspectives on. Through this dichotomy we present typical narratives contained in the Czech and Polish rural novel of the given period. The subsequent interpretative analysis of the texts takes inspiration from contemporary narratology with special attention to the narrator and time categories, and by extension to the interplay of these categories with individual themes, symbols and topoi.
In The Light of Kabbalah: Jewish Mistique in Polish Literature in The Interwar Period
Benešová, Michala ; Poslední, Petr (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee) ; Sobotková, Marie (referee)
Thesis In the Light of Kabbalah: Jewish Mystique in Polish Literature in the Interwar Period deals with different models of reflection of Jewish religious and mystical tradition in the Polish interwar literature (on the example of three authors representing different ways of perceiving their own Jewish roots as well as the processing of themes based on the tradition of Jewish mysticism). Aleksander Wat, originally a futurist, was critical of the Jewish religious tradition - but still cannot his own "Jewishness" escape; prose writer Bruno Schulz offers an unique vision of cosmogony and eschatology reminiscent of - besides other things - selected concepts of Kabbalah; Bolesław Leśmianʼs relationship to this tradition is the looses, but on the other hand his method of working with motives which can interpreted in the context of the Jewish religious tradition is very original. Literary work of all three - as the heirs to the "people of the Book" - is marked by a specific relationship to language and the written word. In addition to this theme we deal with e.g. the Golem motive, the idea of the creation of the world or the idea of God. These analytical chapters are preceded by a theoretical and methodological introduction based on the traditions of literary hermeneutics, but also on selected concepts of...

Kurová, Jana ; Poslední, Petr (advisor) ; Pátková, Jana (referee)
The goal of this thesis entitled The Analysis of the Portrayal of the Region in the Works of the Teschen Silesian Writers via Kubisz's Writings is to bring the life's work of Jan Kubisz-known writer, educator, and community organizer-into public discourse, and to demonstrate the aspects which have influenced both his creations and a Teschenian mentality. We begin with presenting a historical research of the region whose basis rests in Kubisz's works, primarily in Pamiętnik starego nauczyciela. We also discuss the literary characteristics of Teschenian Silesia in order to pinpoint distinctive local tendencies and issues. We proceed to examine Kubisz's approach to Germanization of the region and his handling of nationalism. The analysis of the Teschenian anthem illustrates Kubisz's legacy for the future generations. In order to facilitate the understanding of the terms used in this thesis, the additional chapter outlines their meanings and connotations. Finally, we show the impact of Kubisz's works on local population and its understanding of identity by introducing separate study and interpreting its outcomes. Keywords Teschenian Silesia, Region, Kubisz, the Issue of Nationality, Nationalism, Memorial, Identity
