History of self-helping systems: Fraternities and clubs of temperance at historical territory of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia

Background: Nowadays, we have very little knowledge about the beginnings of the efforts of treatment and prevention of addiction. There are only short works, that have surveyed the topic in our country so far, but these are not following the topic directly, only marginally. The history of treatment of alcohol addiction is not described in detail in the Czech Republic until the beginning of the 20th century. But before this, there was a great deal of effort of many people who made the first steps in the struggle against heavy drinking, alcoholism, or the initial cases of the plague of spirits. Aim: The aim of this research work is to map the establishment, operation and extinction of associations and brotherhoods of temperance in the historical territory of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Methods: The processed data from the 19th and early 20th centuries used at the research work were searched and cumulated with the help of digital libraries: the digital library Brno and the National Library in the collection Kramerius 5 and kramerius.medvik under the keywords mentioned below. Results and conclusion: The data show that there were 10 and one hopeful society (the Society of Temperance for Juveniles) in our historical territory in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.
