Uneven Development of the World Economy

This diploma thesis deals with inequalities within the Word economic development. The development is conceived in the context of world systems theory for the proper evaluation of this development. The question, whether there is a convergence or divergence across countries and groups of countries is an important question of contemporary studies of globalization. While proponents of modernization theory tend to say that countries converge, adherents of world systems theory mostly think the opposite. Another contribution of this work is the evaluation of economic development not based only on the production capabilities and growth. The approach is more complex and includes the development of the society as a whole. Therefore, Human development index was used for analysis and the researched period was set to 1980-2014 due to data availability. The analysis deals not only with inequalities between the parts of the world system, but partially also with inequalities within these parts. The theoretical part consists of discussion of the existing studies of world systems and economic development and explains the necessary terms and context. Regional Aspects of the Transformation of the Slovak Manufacturing Sector in the Period 1997-2011

This master thesis deals with the transformation processes of the Slovak manufacturing sector in the period of 1997-2011. The theoretical framework of the paper presents the comparison of two conceptual approaches - the concept of path-dependency and the concept of footloose multinationals - on the regional distribution of manufacturing activities during the reporting period. Analyzes are made according to a dependent variable, which is the regional employment in the manufacturing sector on the microregional level of NUTS4. Regional changes in the distribution of the manufacturing employment are analyzed employing several independent variables connected to the two theoretical concepts mentioned above. The main goal of the thesis is to shed light on and interpret the changes of industrialization and sectoral changes of the manufacturing sector.

Geographical Analysis of the Brewing Industry in Czechia

This thesis analyses the Czech brewing industry and its integration in transnational production networks by drawing on the perspective of global production networks (GPNs). It evaluates the geographic structure of the Czech brewing industry, the inflow of foreign direct investment after 1990, and, especially, the integration of Czech breweries into GPNs dominated by foreign transnational corporations. The thesis analyses major changes the Czech brewing industry has experienced during the post-1990 transformation of the Czech economy and presents the current state of the industry from the geographical perspective. The methodological section presents and explains the key processes of concentration and de- concentration. The thesis identifies the four different forms of involvement of Czech breweries in GPNs in the brewing industry. The role of foreign lead firms in the Czech brewing industry is analysed in detail. Global Production Networks and Labour: Trade Unions in the Automotive Industry of Czechia and Slovakia

This doctoral thesis focuses on the role of labour in global production networks using the example of the automotive industry in Czechia and Slovakia. Drawing on the agent-based approach, I combine the conceptual framework of global production networks with the trade unions' power resources concept to understand the mechanisms which allow labour to improve working conditions within the integrated periphery of global automotive industry production networks. I base my evidence on qualitative interviews with trade unions' representatives operating at final assembly firms and suppliers, and I complement them with other respondents, such as company managers, sector level and regional level labour union representatives. I conclude that trade unions in the integrated periphery are structurally weak, which poses challenges for future industry development in terms of employment impacts related to decarbonization strategies and the ongoing digitalization of production. The doctoral thesis is composed of four publications where I study trade union strategies and responses related to upcoming changes in the automotive industry. Production Networks of Automobile Industry as a Factor of Regional Development in Czechia Abstract Thesis "Production Networks of automotive industry as a factor of regional development in Czechia" deals with linking economic globalization, global production networks and regional development. The main purpose is to analyze the relationship between regional development and the Czech automotive industry, depending on the position of automotive firms in global production networks. The work focuses on three areas: quantitative analysis of the automobile supplier sector, the spatial heterogenity of firms located in different positions in global production networks and formulating typology of regional development potential. The methodology employs 37 indicators for inter-regional comparisons. Based on comparative analysis, I identified a typology of regions according to their regional develompent potential. This thesis deals with the role of the state in the development of the Czech automotive industry since 1989. It will discuss and critically evaluate the concrete steps which the government implemented in order to support the development automotive industry. Specifically, it will analyze the privatization of the automotive industry, the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI), the revitalization of the automotive industry and the state efforts to increase the competitiveness of the automotive industry through increased spending on research and development (R & D). The core and periphery and their relationship in the European automotive industry

Reducing the number of production platforms for various types of cars has led to significant savings in the production of automobiles. This change, however, was only the beginning of the change which corresponds to today's manufacturing process. Automakers sought additional savings to be able to compete with others, and thus, moved part of their production and research to subcontractors. These changes brought about a transformation in the spatial arrangement of the European automotive industry. The first part of the text is devoted to the definition of the core and the periphery, and describes the development of the automotive industry in Europe. Furthermore, the work deals with the subcontracting industry and its role within car production. The text continues by describing the factors that play a role in the localisation of a particular type of car manufacturer, research centres, and subcontractors. Subsequently, the analysis is devoted to indicators which were used to create a periphery-core index. This index is responsible for defining the core, semi-periphery, and periphery of the automotive industry in the European Union. The role of soft factors in regeneration of old industrial regions: a comparison of Ostrava region, Ruhr area and Saarland

Hlavním cílem předložené disertační práce je kritické zhodnocení role a významu měkkých faktorů regionálního rozvoje v procesu regenerace starých průmyslových regionů v komparativní perspektivě. Práce je členěna do tří základních bloků. V prvním bloku je provedena základní konceptualizace měkkých faktorů regionálního rozvoje, které jsou podrobněji diskutovány v kontextu inovativního milieu a kreativní třídy. Součástí teoretického bloku je taktéž diskuze o charakteristice a povaze starých průmyslových regionů. Druhý blok obsahuje případové studie starých průmyslových regionů Porúří a Sárska. V rámci těchto studií, jsou kriticky hodnoceny přístupy k utváření měkkých faktorů regionálního rozvoje, přičemž struktura a obsah těchto studií odráží rozdílné charakteristiky obou regionů. Závěrečná část druhého bloku je pak věnována možnostem aplikace přístupů k utváření měkkých faktorů regionálního rozvoje z případových studií pro Ostravsko. Za hlavní přístupy, které by přispěly k lepšímu utváření měkkých faktorů v prostředí Ostravska lze považovat podporu existence autonomních intermediálních institucí a vybrané principy kultury plánování.
