The ship as a point of encounter between life and death: nautical metaphor in modern literature

6 Abstract The diploma thesis concerns the topic of nautical metaphorics in modern literature in a broad sense of the term as defined by Silvio Vietta. Thus besides the topic itself and its main focus on the work of Franz Kafka it also covers the process of evolution of its attributes, which led to the specific imagery of modernism on the brink of the 20th century. The work as a whole derives from the conception of the nautical space as a smooth space of nomadism as proposed by Deleuze and Guattari. The first part is based on the propositions of Bachelard's theory of material imagination. It deals with the characteristics of the literary space shaped by the sea element and the possibility of alogorical reading of such images. The hydraulics of the sea provides the nautical space with its unique qualities: shapelessness, flexibility and ambivalence. These enable to percieve the nautical space not only as the space of happenings, but also as the happenings of the space. Thus it puts emphasis on the activity and dynamic plasticity of the substance. The second part reveals the ancient and Christian roots of nautical imagery and its tradition in the European literature. The Metaphor in the Poetry of Social Realism of the 1950s

Based on Lakoff's theory of conceptual metaphor the thesis provides an insight into how the myth of the cult of leadership and the "new" land is realised in poetry of Social Realism of the 1950s. The analysis is based on understanding the myth as a "true story". The inicial part thus deals with the way of creating narrative of the leader in Social Realism. The other chapters contemplate on the how the effect of "real" is achieved, particularly using the metaphors of a "building", "container" and orientational metaphors. Concerning the hagiographic nature of the poetry, the thesis aims at explaining certain analogies and discrepancies between the myth of Social Realism and the Christian myth. Grammar in Writing

The diploma thesis entitled Grammar in Writing focuses on the methods used in teaching grammar in writing, its application in practice and the consequent evaluation based on the progress of students. The theoretical part tries to explain the notion of writing as a skill, the methodology of teaching writing skills and grammar. It also introduces the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - it explains the key competences for writing and the criteria for achieving particular levels. The practical part descibes the realisation of the course Grammar in Writing and detailed lesson plans. As a form of evaluation of the course a language portfolio was designed implementing the requirements of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The practical part also includes the evaluation of the course based on students' work and the language portfolio.
