Dolonnuur monastery and relations between the Qing court, Inner Mongolia and Khalkha in 17th-19th centuries reflected by selected archive materials

This thesis deals with selected forms of the Manchu court influence on the relations of Khalkha and Inner Mongolia, eventually Northern China. It describes mainly the influences in the field of Buddhism (sir-a-yin šasin). It underlines the development of cultural-religious relations, phenomenon of pilgrimages, particularly the pilgrimages to Wutaishan, but the main topic is the role of Dolonnuur monastery and Dolonnuur municipality in the religious relations between Khalkha, Inner Mongolia and the Manchu court. Author points out, how the transitional period of these relations is reflected in the stories of Dolonnuur monks and in the increasing importance of Dolonnuur as a center of Chinese trade. This analysis is based on the local archive sources unpublished so far, especially the correspondence diaries of Dolonnuur monastery administrative bureau.

Textual Analysis of the Extant Text of The Secret History of the Mongols

Textual Analysis of the Extant Original of The Secret History of the Mongols Abstract The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze every aspect of textual nature present in the Chinese original of the Secret History of the Mongols. The work consists of four chapters that touch issues such as the Chinese characters used for the transcription, their pronunciation and meaning, as well as invented or wrong characters. A list is presented with all the Mongolian syllables obtainable by means of the Chinese transcription system and with all the characters used for this. Subsequently, graphic aspects such as word division or punctuation are examined. The last chapter approaches the glossing system of the Mongolian text used in this work. On the basis of the analysis of the collected data, some plausible assumptions about historical or linguistic issues are advanced, such as the ethnic identity of the author of the transcript or the author of the glosses, the existence of a Mongolian dialect with own characteristics in the Yuan dynasty environment, or the reason why this transcript was glossed, and whether it was done out of an original written in Uyghur script. Grammatical descriptors of the language of the Secret history of the Mongols. (One of the questions of the direct Chinese translation of SHM)

The purpose of the present thesis is to deal with the topíc of the Chinese descriptive particles of Mongolian affixes, used in the side-by-side literal translation of the Chi nese transcription of The Secret History of the Mongols. The work is presented in the form of a list of Mongolian affixes. Each entry is completed with the Chinese character used for transcribing the given affix, a very brief explanation of it, the Chinese character used as a descriptor, and examples of the use of every affix. On the basis of the analysis of the collected data, this paper surveys the frequency of occurrence of these descriptors in the interlinear Chi nese glosses, so as to give evidence on the Chinese glossarists' intention to provide relevant information for the teaching of the Mongolian language. The ethnolinguistic aspects of the latest religious development in Mongolia

Since the collapse of the communist regime in Mongolia in the beginning of 1990, the country opened itself to external world in many various aspects. In this respect, the Christian missionaries became one of the most visible signs of the process of democratization. However, linguistic problems associated with the newly introduced Christian terminology started to play a decisive role soon. During the 90's of the 20th century several Mongolian Versions of New Testament were published, from which the translation made by the Mongolian Bible Translation Committee and another one by J. Gibbens' team are of the greatest importance. These versions are far from having any connection to each other , thus completely dissimilar terminology is applied in both of them. It is my intention through this thesis, to deal with the problems of disunity of the key Biblical vocabulary in the present day Mongolian language. With respect to comprehensiveness, I describe briefly the resent state or level of the spread of Christian teaching in the country, where data collected within my field research undertaken in three phases between 1997 and 2002 are used.
