Health theories in the contemporary media discourse

The aim of this thesis is to present three different sociologically relevant conceptions (theories) of health and to explore their presence in Czech internet media. Based on different typologies, I have chosen three theories to work with in my thesis: Health as the healthy lifestyle, Health as social relationships, and Health as the ability to function. In terms of the chosen theories I also explore the presence of topics related to social determinants of health or to its consequences in the most read news websites. I explore whether the social aspects of health are being mentioned in the media and how they are presented. I point to the diversity of health conceptions and also to the existence of many different factors, which influence the overall health condition. The analysis is framed by the conception of social construction of reality: the media content is influenced by the society, but it also has an impact on thoughts and acts of the society. I have used content analysis to examine a total of 329 articles published on the websites novinky.cz and idnes.cz in 2009 and 2019. As a result of the analysis, I show that the chosen theories as well as the social determinants and consequences of health are quite higly represented in the news websites.
