The Politics and Policies of the Catholic Church in Social Revolution
Balthazor, Shannon ; Jirsová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Jirsová, Pavlína (referee)
For many centuries the Catholic Church has been an influential contributor to social policy and a political force in Central Europe and in Latin America, It has been a shaping power in both regions and has endured through many changes in governments. Some of the reasons why the Catholic Church has managed to endure in these regions have been because it has made political choices with regard to the ruling powers throughout the years and also has worked to become a valuable social institution to the people living in the regions. The middle of the twentieth century brought with it major political and social changes, both in the regions discussed and inside the Catholic Church itself. The Church at this point in time is not longer the builder of nations it was in past centuries and instead pursued a more non-interventionist policy toward politics. The Church chose to pursue policies that limit political involvement and place renewed focus on spiritual and humanitarian matters the questions this paper seeks to answer are: What exactly are these new policies in the twentieth century and how has the Church implemented them? Has the Catholic Church been able to apply these new policies consistently to the situations in Central Europe and Latin America? Has it been biased by preferring democratic governments or...
Qualified viewer and his/her viewing habits
Dostál, Ivo ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Jirsová, Pavlína (referee)
In our study we focus on the possibilities of different reception of popular media content among different types of audiences. The term audience is very unstable within the media discourse. In the second chapter, we tried to summarize the possible approaches in audience analysis, audience construction and the discursive changes while operating with the term audience. We added a basic theoretical framework on qualitative research and the possible distinctions of quantitative methods in the second chapter. Possible ways of conducting a qualitative study were also discussed here and embedded within the questions of validity and reliability of quantitative study. We decided to conduct a qualitative study based on the concept of grounded theory (introduced by Strauss and Glaser). In the fourth chapter we tried to introduce a specific category of audience called the "qualified viewer". We have defined this category as university graduates with knowledge of production background of the media institutions and a hypothetical power to accelerate the success of the TV content by intertextualizing it. Using the snowball technique we create a sample of such qualified viewers and conduct in-depth interviews and questionnaire research among them. In the process of three types of coding (using techniques presented by...

Vašáková, Jana ; Potůček, Martin (advisor) ; Jirsová, Pavlína (referee)
The aim of this paper is to analyze the key characteristics of Structural Funds implementation in the 10 New Member States during the 2004-2006 period. The paper introduce the basic information about the Structural Funds, explore the Structural Funds implementation in the individual countries, and at the end it compares and summarizes findings. The main goal of this paper is to introduce Structural Funds and explore how the New Member States utilized them. What were their priority areas for the observed period? How much money individual countries were allocated? How much money they were able to absorb? The Structural Funds are important for the regional development. They fund investments, innovations, and support policies and measurements which should help countries to develop. And because the 10 New Member States were, at the time of accession, less developed than the other Member States, I decided to take a look what opportunities the NMS had in order to improve their situation.
Media representation of Czech nobility in the context of restitution claims
Svobodová, Kateřina ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Jirsová, Pavlína (referee)
The question of integration of nobility into the larger society has come to light over the last 15 years when representatives of Czech nobility addressed public attention concerning restitution claims. As a research shows, the attitude of Czech society towards nobility carries xenophobic features. [CYYM]. In today's society, for many participants media is often the only source of information about certain people or events. Representatives of noble class are among those "unknown quantities" because the majority of the Czech population usually has only superficial personal experience with their lifestyles, standards and values of nobility. These are the exact cases where the media may acquire the potential to infl uence the attitude of the public. The aim of the thesis was to identify how Czech media covers the noble class in the context of their restitution claims and whetherthey confirm or deny existing stereotypesand prejudice. For historic reasons opinion of nobility within Czech society is rather negative. Media has the power to change this by representing nobility as people who are responsible for their property, carry certain moral values, and respect their family and traditions. However, media tend to reflect the opinions dominated in larger society. In this way publishers are in the business of...
