Petr Bezruč and Interwar Workers’ Movement in Ostrava Region: The Work of the Poet across Classes, Confessions and Political Parties
Jemelka, Martin
The Brazilian Agrarian-industrial Towns of Jan Antonín Baťa (1940 - 1965): Bata Shoe Company's Ideal Industrial Town as Transnational Crossings of Urban Planning Ideas
Costa da Silva, Davi ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Sonkoly, Gábor (referee) ; Jemelka, Martin (referee)
This master thesis deals with the towns that were established by the Czech entrepreneur Jan Antonín Baťa in Brazil between 1941 and 1965: Batatuba, Vila CIMA - Indiana, Mariápolis, Bataguassu and Batayporã. The phenomenon of the Brazilian Baťa towns is analysed through lenses of the histoire croisée approach in order to show these cities as a result of the interaction between several urban planning concepts, Brazilian political and economic contexts, and Jan A. Baťa 's own plans and intentions. To do so, I analyze several projects and relevant supporting documentation about the Bata Shoe Company's ideal industrial town as well as the cities established by Jan Antonín Baťa in Brazil. Therefore, the Brazilian Bata towns are presented as a special chapter of a transnational history of the company towns established by the Baťa Shoe Company in different areas of the world. Primary sources indicate that Jan Antonín Baťa wanted to create mixed agrarian-industrial settlements in which families would be able to work on factories and farms at the same time, creating a new urban model that I am calling the "Bata Agrarian-industrial town". Keywords: Brazilian Bata towns, Jan Antonín Baťa, Agrarian-industrial town, transnational urban studies
The Activity of the Order of Malta in the Czech Lands in the Time of the so-called First Republic and its Economic Aspects
Pola, Martin ; Jemelka, Martin (referee)
(in English) The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta is the oldest and most important knightly order of the Catholic Church. Its origins are connected with the crusades to the Holy Land and it came to the Bohemian territory in the second half of the 12th century. Until the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire it enjoyed an exceptional position, but after the creation of the so-called first Czechoslovak Republic its position was greatly weakened. The new state, primarily a part of its political elites, was not inclined to the Catholic Church, and for a number of contemporaries represented this traditional and aristocratic order a relic of an old monarchy. The difficult political and social position of the order was accompanied by economic difficulties caused, inter alia, by land reform, which had a significant negative effect on the order's land property. The aim of this thesis is to describe the operation of the order at this time with a focus on its economic activities. Key words Order of Malta, Grand Priory of Bohemia, Economic activity, First Czechoslovak Republic, Land reform

Gecko, Tomáš ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Zářický, Aleš (referee) ; Jemelka, Martin (referee)
The aim of the dissertation is to understand the formation and development of the market for construction materials (cement, lime and bricks) in Cisleithania and Czechoslovakia. Emphasis is placed on market trends (changes in consumer habits, new technologies), market monopolisation, state interventionism and institutional changes in business activities (capital inputs of the banking sector and the spread of capital companies). The dissertation contentrates on the basic market conditions and market structure, as well as the strategies of the market players. The market performance (the impacts of the construction materials industry on the Cisleithanian and Czechoslovak economies) is also included. The research is limited by the period of the so-called Great Depression (construction materials began to be produced on the industrial basis) and the turn of 1938/1939, marking the instrumentalization of the Czech lands in favor of the German economy. The dissertation is based on methods of industrial economics (Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm), economics, economic geography and traditional methodology of economic history (especially business history, hermeneutic and statistical method).
