Phenomenon of "bespoke bonnet ceremony" in contemporary Slovakia. Recontextualisation and commodification of folk tradition.

At present, we notice an increased interest in folklore traditions and effort to put them to various spheres of everyday life. These 'revitalizing' efforts can be seen, for example, in the wedding ceremonies. The goal of this thesis is to analyze this tendency in modern weddings in Slovakia, with an emphasis on the highlight of the wedding - putting off head wreath and bonnet wedding ceremony. Nowadays it's common to commission a folk ensemble for these events. Even though the phenomena of bonnet wedding ceremony is considered to be a modern tradition that is based on certain historical bonds this revitalization process causes some semantic shifts, change of its functions that results in its different form. The focus of this thesis is aimed towards these changes - for example, the change of the function of traditional folk clothing, decontextual shift from the ritual to theatralization, the influence of shifts for participants and others involved, the commodification and the commercialization of the ceremony. The thesis also analyzes the relations between the folklore and folklorism, 'authentical' and stylized folklore and the general idea of the tradition as well as its contemporary social and cultural function. Shepherding in the Beskid Mountains with Main Focus on the Area around Frydek-Mistek

The bachelor thesis focuses on the history and development of shepherd's huts in the area of the Beskydy Mountains. The main attention is paid to localizing of the particular, previously unidentified shepherd's huts in the region and specifically in the area of the Ondrejnik Peak in the district of Frydek - Mistek and the territorial unit of the Moravian- Silesian Beskydy Mountains, starting with the surroundings of Frenstat in the east and ending up with the surroundings of Jablunkov in the west. The aim was to determine the exact geographic coordinates not only of the shepherd's huts, but also of the former hovels. Further attention is also paid to buildings of shepherd's hut type, way of running the households, farming, shepherd's hut furnishing, products from shepherd's huts and shepherd's huts folklore. Current hunting customs and habits as means of social control over hunting practice represented by examples of Central Bohemian and South Bohemian hunting communities and their collective hunts

This master thesis focuses on contemporary hunting customs and their use in practice. It shows attemts by hunting clubs and societies as well as individual hunters to maintain Czech hunting customs. The thesis aims to present and evaluate various hunting habits and ceremonies in order to make assessment regarding current practice. The thesis has goal of finding how the social control of contemporary Czech game management is being executed in relation to the basic values of said society, respect for the nature and its animals. Above all this work tries to find out if the social control is maintained with hunting customs. Theoretical part of this thesis analyzes normatively the ideal procedures and forms of hunting practice as prescribed by the hunters code and professional guidelines, it also analyzes hunting from the perspective of existing legal framework. Research aimed at gaining real-life experience with hunting practice had been conducted between 2015 and 2016 among selected hunting clubs and societies. Data collected in the field will provide basis for comparison between hunting theory and practice.

Anthropophagy in the context of international folklore

(in English) Thesis is focused on issues of cannibalism as an almost universal cultural construct, which we can find across all the world cultures.Particularly it focuses on imaginary man- eating creatures in international folklore and mythology. The work constitutes of four parts. First part is introduction of theoretical-methodological conceptual background, second part forms author's own typological classification of anthropophagi based on materials accessed from universal folklore indexes . Third part is short probing questionnaire research concentrated on a specific type of anthropophagi - boogeyman. The last part, conclusion, summarizes gathered data and provides possibilities of future research. The objective of this work is comprehensive classification of anthropophagus beings according to their type. Based on this classification it is possible to track occurrences of anthropophagi in contemporary folk narratives documented in actual oral transmission and compare it with international parallels.

The archetype of hero in superhero comic books

The Bachelor thesis is focused on options of study of superhero comics from perspective of popular culture studies, studies of cultural stereotypes and studies of archetypes based on research of comic books from the biggest publishers Marvel Comics and DC Comics. By using comparative method and drawing from studies of Lord Raglan, Vladimir J. Propp, Joseph Campbell and more a superhero is compared with hero of tradition and hero of folktales. There was also described a way of mythologizing the superhero. Moreover there was conducted a research focused on archetype of hero and was pointed out more possible archetypes appearing in superhero comics.

Contemporary prosaic folklore in Nymburk district after 1945.

The aim of this thesis is to conduct complex research of orally transmitted genres of modern folklore in the area of the Nymburk district. Importance of contemporary legends (urban legends) and rumours is stressed in this work. The author is trying to find an influence of international narratives on those actually collected during his research in the smalltown and rural areas. On the other hand, there could be an examples of original and unique narratives that could be found only in area of the Nymburk district. Main hypothesis of the thesis is to find out whether Czech oral narratives from big cities differ from those of rural and smalltown areas, and whether some kinds of these stories can survive only in one of those areas. Study also focus on who from local society is mostly spreading such narratives.

Folk medicine in Moravian-Silesian Beskids

(in English) This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of folk medicine in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. The aim of the thesis is to present the current state of folk medicine and its methods and meanings, focusing on phytotheraphy and medical treatment of the most common diseases in the studied area. Traditional folk healers who mainly worked in the 20th century, their lives, methods of healing, and the potential transformation of healing practice at the beginning of the 21st century are also introduced. The thesis tries to capture not only the present state of folk medicine in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, but also its recent history and possible future development. Attention is paid to the status of folk medicine and its reflection in local folklore. The methodological basis of the thesis is grounded in the methodology of historical and anthropological sciences and in the classical concept of ethnological fieldwork; with ethnographic interview as a data collection technique. The results of the fieldwork show that folk medicine is still a significant part of people's lives in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and that folk healing methods and practices are still used by the population of the area. Peter Janecek, Ph.D. Praha, 2015-08-16 The aim of the study is to outline the Golem legend, through the work of Alois Jirasek: Old Czech Legends (1894) a film by Martin Fric: The Emperor's Baker and Baker's Emperor (1951), which enables got Golem today's visually similar. Subsequent demonstration on how much above two sources affect people's perceptions on the topic. The aim of this work is also to show the gradual disappearance of the original legends of the 16th century and approach the area where the phenomenon Golem applied later: literature, film, tourism and the transformation of the 19th-21st centuries.

Transformation of Trickster in Contemporary Russian Children's Folklore

The theme of this thesis is the transformation of a trickster figure in the Russian children's folklore. The first part is devoted to an analysis of trickster tale and trickster heroes. This section is primarily based on classic works of prominent ethnologists, anthropologists and folklorists - they are mainly the works of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Vladimir Propp, Jeleazar Meletinskij and many others. This section is concerned mainly on the systematization and analysis of the classic characteristics of a hero trickster for subsequent analysis and comparison of the current hero of the sadistic poems - the little boy. The second part is an introduction to the themes of the sadistic poems - it is dedicated to the history of their origin; historical, cultural and social factors that had an impact on their development; systemization of the sadistic poems by topics and trends. This part is based on the works of Russian anthropologists, folklorists and psychologists. The third part of my work is dedicated to an independent comparative analysis of the nature of the protagonist of the sadistic poems - the boy as a trickster figure. Islam in the North Caucasus: History and Contemporary Trends on example of Kabardino- Balkaria and Dagestan The following thesis focuses on selected key aspects of Islam in the North Caucasus, with emphasis on two North Caucasus republics - Kabardino-Balkaria on the west and Dagestan on the east. The first part will follow the penetration of Islam in the North Caucasus, its role in the resistance against the Russian empire and the impact religion had on traditional Caucasian society. In the second part it will be analyzed current trends of Islam in the region, the mutual influence of religion and socio-political situation and the relation between traditional Islam and its radical forms.
