Tommy Wieringa as a 21st century author: the writer within and outside the publishing sphere
Vítek, Lukáš ; Sedláčková, Lucie (advisor) ; Gielen, Albertus Josephus Dominicus (referee)
(English) The aim of this master thesis is to analyse the fiction of Tommy Wieringa, specifically in relation to the concept of the posture developed by Jérôme Meizoz. The distinction between the internal posture and the external posture is essential in this theory. Therefore, there can arise a tension between both images of the author (i.e., in the terminology of Daniël Rovers, between auteursfiguur and figuurauteur). This thesis is based on the question if this statement is valid in case of the work of Wieringa. Keywords: Wieringa, author's posture, author's image, literary identity, self-fashioning, authorship, the literary field
Identity and location in the novel about South Africa
Hrabalová, Ivana ; Sedláčková, Lucie (advisor) ; Gielen, Albertus Josephus Dominicus (referee)
The master thesis Identity and location in the novel about South Africa explores the relation between identity of a person, group, culture or nation and location. The objective of this study is to determine how this mutual relation is reflected in the literature. To formulate the main research question: In how far the location where a man is located can determine his identity in the novel about South-Africa? How the relation between identity and location is reflected in Etienne van Heerden's novel Kikoejoe? The theoretical part of the thesis describes the status quaestionis about the topics of identity and location. It determines the meanings that are attributed to those two concepts in the postcolonial discourse. This master thesis makes use of cultural analysis, imagology and deconstruction. The practical part of the thesis applies those theories on the novel Kikoejoe (1996) by the South African author Etienne van Heerden. The analysis explores the relation between plaas, the traditional South African farm, and the Afrikaner identity. Furthermore, this study uses the concept of hybrid identity introduced by the postcolonial theorist Homi K. Bhabha.

The crisis of everyday life in the novels A Rose of Flesh by Jan Wolkers and Seize the Day by Saul Bellow
Vítek, Lukáš ; Sedláčková, Lucie (advisor) ; Gielen, Albertus Josephus Dominicus (referee)
(English) The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse how the phenomenon of a personal crisis is described in the novels A Rose of Flesh by Jan Wolkers and Seize the Day by Saul Bellow. To make it clearer that the crisis is an exceptional, painful but also potentially positive period of human life, the concept is contrasted with the notion/idea of "everyday life". Specifically, the author is comparing the impact of the states of anxiety that the protagonists of both novels experience in connection with their daily rituals and habits. Theoretically, the thesis offers a systematic explanation of the causes, the symptoms and the effects of a personal crisis, including an explanation of the anxiety and guilt. This is followed by an interpretation of both novels with regard to the tension between the ordinary and the unordinary. This interpretation demonstrates that the exposure to suffering in the crisis does not have to be permanent and that it can lead to the discovery of new ways out. This fact is made evident without the exit of a dark tunnel being shown. Keywords: psychological crisis, everyday life, existential problems, suffering, guilt, anxiety, panic disorder, the past, midlife crisis
