An Assistant for Conversational Search

This thesis aims to improve the user experience for an existing information retrieval system in the domain of educational content by implementing a conversational search feature. Conversational search resembles a dialogue with an assistant - a librarian. The conversational search process involves an initial query gradually specified by clarifying questions. In addition to the conversational search feature, we propose further extensions: our own query expansion method based on an ontology and a facet recommendation approach. The conversational search feature is evaluated with real teachers, i.e. the prospective users of the system, showing that the new feature is a useful alternative to the standard search. 1
Evaluation methods of systems for unsegmented speech retrieval.

Methods that are currently used for evaluation of speech retrieval are described in this work. Techniques that are used for speech retrieval are explained, as well as methods used for evaluation of this retrieval. Special attention is paid to processing of unsegmented records. The main aim of the work is to verify whether the methods currently used for evaluation of speech retrieval are appropriate to use and modify these methods if needed. Empirical methods based on the user`s perception of speech retrieval is used for this verification. Modified metrics are compared with the original ones.
Antenna Noise Temperature Calculation

This work studies antenna noise temperature computation. The antenna noise temperature is calculated directly from its de nition. Thus, it is necessary to rotate the antenna radiation pattern. Euler matrix is used to rotate the radiation pattern. This work includes software for the antenna noise temperature computation. It calculates antenna noise temperature from the radiation pattern based measured or simulated data and from measured or prede ned environment noise temperature.
Information retrieval and navigation in audio-visual archives

The thesis probes issues associated with interactive audio and video retrieval of relevant segments. Text-based methods for search in audio-visual archives using automatic transcripts, subtitles and metadata are first described. Search quality is analyzed with respect to video segmentation methods. Navigation using multimodal hyperlinks between video segments is then examined as well as methods for automatic detection of the most informative anchoring segments suitable for subsequent hyperlinking application. The described text-based search, hyperlinking and anchoring methods are finally presented in working form through their incorporation in an online graphical user interface.
