Maik Yohansen's prose: analysis of the main features and literary principles

The proposed work is devoted to the analysis of the prose of Maik Yohansen, who was one of the most interesting Ukrainian writers of the 20's and early 30's. The purpose of this work is to explore and characterize the main tendencies and specifics of the author's work on the example of his short stories. In the first part, the personality and activities of Maik Yohansen are considered in a broader historical and literary context; special attention is given to the development of contemporary Ukrainian literature as well as the analysis of Yohansen's literary-scientific texts. The second part is practical and focuses on the analysis of Yohansen's stories. In conclusion, the poetics of M. Johansen is reflected. The issue of translating subtitles on the material of the television series To Catch the Kaidash (Спіймати Кайдаша)

The master thesis The Issue of Translating Subtitles on the Material of the Television Series To Catch the Kaidash (Спіймати Кайдаша) deals with the analysis and determining the strategy of translation of the TV series To Catch the Kaidash into Czech. The series is specific in that it is a modern adaptation of the classic work of Ukrainian literature, The Kaidash Family (Кайдашева сім'я, written in 1878) by Ivan Nechui-Levyts'kyi: events from the late 19th century are transposed to the years 2004-2014. The series retains and extends the issues of the original work, and the language is rich in elements of surzhyk, dialect, archaic lexis, local realia, literary quotations, and allusions. The first part of the thesis deals with the reception and the question of the success of the series in Ukraine. The second part focuses on determining the translation strategy for the material of selected excerpts from the series. The aim of the thesis is to examine the issues of translation of the given series and to determine the most appropriate strategy. The issues of translation of realia and language phenomena of Oleksiy Chupa's novel Fairy tales from my bomb shelter

The thesis The Issues of Translation of Realia and Language Phenomena of Oleksiy Chupa's Novel "Fairy tales from my bomb shelter" focuses on the analysis of translation problems and realia of Donbass in the novel by contemporary Ukrainian writer Oleksiy Chupa. This work is specific in its mapping the mental image of contemporary Donbas and its large amount of realia, slang, colloquial expressions, and surzhyk. The first part of the thesis is devoted to an overview of the development of the image of Donbas in Ukrainian literature, in particular, on the example of several contemporary authors; the second part focuses on the selection of translation theories, theoretical and practical methods for the translation of linguistic phenomena occurring in the work under study. Practical examples from the text of the work with possible translation solutions are also presented. The aim of the thesis is to determine the functionality of theoretical translation procedures in the translation of a particular literary work. This thesis focuses on Ukrainian emigration in Czechoslovakia, especially the personality of Mykyta Shapoval and the history of the last two institutions he founded. The aim of the thesis is to better evaluate the importance of the Ukrainian Workers' University in the context of Mykyta Shapoval's activities. The first chapter focuses on Shapoval's personality, his activities during the Ukrainian War of Independence and the years of exile. The second chapter outlines the existence of Ukrainian emigration in interwar Czechoslovakia and pays a special attention to the Ukrainian Public Committee. The last chapter presents a description of the two institutions that Shapoval founded, the Ukrainian Institute of Sociology and the Ukrainian Workers' University, their history, programs, and activities. Archival editions of historical newspapers and magazines were used as the thesis' research material. The aim of the thesis has only been partially fulfilled; for a deeper understanding of the issue, it would be necessary to study the personal archive of Mykyta Shapoval, located in Kyiv. The issue of the the children's literature translation demonstrated on the example of the prose Mox Nox by Tanya Malyarchuk

This thesis sets a target to demonstrate the problems of contemporary children's literature translation from Ukrainian to the Czech language explained by an example of the book MOX NOX written by Tanya Malyarchuk (Таня Малярчук. MOX NOX. Львів: Видавництво Старого Лева, 2018). The aim of the thesis is to identify various pitfalls of children's literature translation, which triggers a very different approach from adults' literature. The work is divided into two parts: the theoretical and a practical (analytical) one. The first part will be focused on the history of translating from Ukrainian to Czech in the period from nineteenth and twentieth century and after the fall of the USSR with focus on children's literature. I will briefly analyse the studied text and identify the specific typological questions as well (translation of names, translation of the dialect, neologisms etc.). In the analytical part, the thesis will examine the overall characteristics of the text's style, it will interpret both the whole book and the first three translated chapters separately and it will aim at the specific translation problems which the text brings. Donbas in Contemporary Ukrainian Literature

The thesis deals with the image of Donbas as a unique topos in selected works of contemporary East Ukrainian writers. Throughout the last century, the symbolic value of the region, determined primarily by the peripheral character of the area and the dominant industrial nature of the landscape, has been shaped in Ukrainian culture. Nowadays, as a result of the social developments of the last decades, and especially due to the ongoing war, the forms of the symbolic geography of the region are substantially re-evaluated and updated. The first part of the thesis outlines the historical development of the region and the dominant myths and metaphors of the Donbas associated with it - these function as a backdrop for the examination of the current literature. The core of the thesis is the analysis of selected literary works of authors coming from this region; these are mainly the works of writers Vladimir Rafeyenko, Serhiy Zhadan and poet Lyuba Yakymchuk. The specific nature of the literature of the borderlands and the representation of collective memory serve as the interpretive frameworks. Legendary character of Marko Prokliaty, its role in the works of Olexa Storozhenko and in selected works of Ukrainian literature

Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl zmapovat folklorně-fantastické prvky v tvorbě Valerije Ševčuka, který je jedním z nejvýznamnějších současných ukrajinských prozaiků a zároveň jedním z nejvýraznějších představitelů šedesátníků, laureátem Ševčenkovy státní ceny a držitelem různých literárních cen a ocenění literárních časopisů. Práce se v první řadě zaměřuje na folklorně-mytologické motivy, které jsou pro Ševčukovu tvorbu příznačné a jejichž propojením s prvky současné literatury vytváří autor originální žánr, který v kontextu ukrajinské literatury nemá obdoby. Stranou pozornosti nezůstane ani odraz barokních prvků v Ševčukově tvorbě. Pokusím se rovněž nastínit, jakým způsobem ovlivnila současná politická situace autorův výběr prostředí, v němž se jednotlivé příběhy odehrávají. Blíže prozkoumám folklorněmytologické postavy, které se ve velké míře objevují v románu . Na materiálu románu Příbytek pokory představím filosofii autora projevující se v osudech a myšlenkách hlavních hrdinů.

Venedikt Jerofejev. "Moscow to the end of the line" or the wanderings of the holy fool with a postmodern subtext

Moscow to the end of the Line by Venedikt Jerofejev is frequently mentioned among those literary works that are enumerated while pointing at issue of Russian postmodern literature formation. This novel has become the main topic of a whole number of literary papers that are being analyzed in the first, introductory, chapter of this thesis. Special attention is paid to those works that are dealing with the motifs of the Holy Fool and wandering in the novel. Part one also analyzes various peculiarities of Venedikt Jerofejev's biography and diary, which influenced the novel-writing. Although the novel, which is being analyzed by us, still carries some features of a traditional realistic discourse, it can be discussed from a postmodern point of view due to such features as its hypertextuality, «the death of the author», the usage of «the author's mask», a real language replacement by the «overlanguage» of simulating order, changes that take place in subject-object relationship etc, which are typical for the period when the novel appeared. Those aspects that are characteristic for primary understanding of postmodernism and for its «Eastern» modification are being discussed in the second part. The analysis of Boris Antonenko-Davydovytch's of early novels

In my diploma I concentrate on the analysis of short stories by Boris AntonenkoDavydovych, the Ukrainian writer, whose works belong to the first half of the 20th century. I especially aim at Davydovych's prozaic works from the 1920s which had been affected by revolution changes and after-revolution-chaotic reality. First I introduce the literary process and time when the author was active and I chronologically name the sequence of Davydovych's prose. In the first chapter I analyze the single stories at large while focusing on the action that is later divided into partial chapters and focusing on the most important plots and expressive characteristics, I explore the composition issue, the characters themselves, time and space point of view and also the author's style, the method of his narration and his choice of lexical and figurative instruments. The second chapter concerns the topics of Davydovych's stories. His works from the 1920s map the historical topics of the World War I and the year 1905, the civil war and the famine in the years of 1921-23, the after-revolution reality. Volodymyr Vynnychenko's influence on Mykola Kulish's and Valerian Pidmohylnyj's writings

Volodymyr Vynnychenko entered the Ukrainian literature in 1900s. His first short story aroused general attention among reviewers and readers. No other Ukrainian writer of the first quarter of the 20th century gained such popularity and eminence as V. Vynnychenko. During his 50-year literary career the author has gone through an evolution: from early short stories to novels, dramas; and his final writings are marked by science fiction novels, detective genre, political and philosophical novels. His writings were published in plentiful amounts. He held this sovereign position in the Ukrainian literature almost until 1933. An extensive range of thematic and genre specifications of Vynnychenko's writings influenced a great number of Ukrainian writers (e.g. Mykola Kulish and Valerian Pidmohylny), who took up his life-work and elaborated Vynnychenko's methods in a special, unique way. In his plays M. Kulish reassumes various thematic aspects of Vynnychenko's works, for instance a motif of the "Ukrainianess", the formation of the Ukrainian people, the conflict between "Russianness" and the "Ukrainianess", the society formation.
