Crown prince Rudolf and the Reform of the Habsburg Monarchy

The aim of this bachelor thesis is an analysis of Crown Prince Rudolf's opinions as reflected in his original texts, primarily in his newspaper articles, which were published anonymously. The author focuses on texts written about three main topics: Austrian nobility, Rudolf's attitude towards the many nations living within the Habsburg monarchy and the functionality of dualism or the possibility of a different form of government. The author has used the following methods to explore these topics: analysis of newspaper articles, other original texts and analysis of correspondence with fellow journalist Moritz Szeps as well as literature search. The thesis presents the situation in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 1870s and 1880s and describes Rudolf's position on the issue of nationalism in a multi-ethnic monarchy, his views concerning the Balkan question, religious tolerance and the Jewish question. The Crown Princes' opinion on dualism and its disadvantages compared to a unified empire, his attitude towards the possibility of further splitting of the monarchy or its federalization, and his opinion on the possibility of the monarchy's dissolution are also presented. Life in the seventeenth and eighteenth century Christian and Muslim settings through the Prism of the Jewish Subjects Abstract In this comparative thesis two types of civilizations in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries stand side by side with a special focus on the topic of converts and religious conversion to and from Judaism. The Latin Christian civilization is represented by the Habsburg Empire, while the Islamic civilization is represented by the Ottoman Empire. These two religious, political and cultural settings managed religious minorities differently, but at the same time there were ongoing encounters of various character between them in the studied period. This thesis is based mainly on the Jewish responsa literature, which recorded everyday problems tackled by the Jewish communities. In a complementary way, historical documents of state provenance were taken into account. These were primarily records of ecclesiastical provenance for the Habsburg part and critical editions of court records (sijills) for the Ottoman part. The comparative analysis was carried out in multiple modes against the backdrop of concepts of legal spaces and social figurations as formulated by Norbert Elias. The bachelor's thesis aims to analyze the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, between 1837 and 1841. The events that accompanied her birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and primarily her accession to the throne, coronation, reign of the queen during the reign of Lord Melbourne and then Sir Robert Peel. The work ends with a chapter on choosing a suitable match for marriage, the subsequent marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert and the birth of the first-born daughter.
