Pandemic and governance: Comparison of the Czech Republic and Portugal

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of pandemics and governance, and compares the Czech Republic and Portugal. This topic was chosen by the bachelor thesis because of the similarities between the two countries and also because of the high increase of infected people at the beginning of 2021. The research question that the thesis will try to answer is: What factors are critical to coping with a pandemic? Where the thesis has identified three criteria that it will compare for both countries, namely government institutions, government communication and government instruments. She chose these factors on the basis of finding out how the governance factor works in the country and to what extent the government is able to influence the course of the pandemic. First, the thesis will look at the literature it will draw from, explain how the world has responded to the covid pandemic, why the thesis chose South Korea and Japan as benchmark countries, and focus on how pandemic governance affects the degree of democracy. The thesis will then show the methods used to conduct the analysis, why it chose Portugal and the Czech Republic as benchmarks, and finally explain the time period it examines.
