Flooding in the Czech Republic in 2002 from the perspective of victims and helpers: implications for the organization of the help, psychosocial aspects of the help
Kohoutek, Tomáš ; Urbánek, Tomáš ; Čermák, Ivo ; Špok, Dalibor ; Navrátil, Marek
A survey of 492 households, which were struck by floods in the Czech Republic in 2002, has been carried out in collaboration with the Czech Caritas in winter of 2003/2004 in all the struck regions of the Czech Republic. Structured interview technique administered by interviewers was chosen and supplemented with several scales and was focused on the issues of the course of the flood, impact on the household, of the provided and needed help, and of the psychological impact of the event. Within another part of the research, professional helpers reflected their own experience too. The results are focused primarily on the issues of the needs of the victims in relation to the impact of deluges, on the organization of the help, on the impact of deluges on the minds of victims, and on the psychosocial aspects of the aid.
Unconscious perception still sharply perceived
Špok, Dalibor
This study deals with the roots of interest in unconscious perception research in psychology. It introduces the concepts of strong and weak unconsciousness, methodological approaches (direct/indirect effects of perception, signal-detection theory) and their pros and cons. It describes incorrect-trials analysis, which can serve as a possible solution to some of the problems with experimental design of direct/indirect effects of perception.
Semantic map of the concept "consciousness": Associations and categories
Špok, Dalibor
In the times of unprecedented interest in scientific research on consciousness, we should advance from ad hoc definitions towards thorough analysis of the meaning of this broad and ambiguous term. This analysis should be done not only in terms of philosophy of mind and various philosophical and psychological traditions, but also by examining the semantic position of this term in language and everyday use. This study tries to delimit basic "semantic map" of the term consciousness, basic realms and categories of everyday thinking about consciousness. If we want to research consciousness scientifically, we cannot omit any of these categories or we have to be aware of this limitation and narrow our scientific definition of the term.

Researchers from the fields of psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, linguistics, biology and computer science discussed on the current state of the research on cognition. The conference Kognice 2006 offered the platform for the interdisciplinary dialogue and for learning about the very different approaches and languages which are linked by their curiosity on the nature of the human mind.

It depends on what "consious" means: Methodology of unconscious perception research
Špok, Dalibor
Research on unconscious cognitive processes has been a controversial topic since the foundation of experimental psychology. However, we cannot consider it a psychological relict, but developing realm of research, with ongoing conceptual and methodological progress. This paper chiefly presents methodological approaches having been developed mainly since 1980’s and thus illustrates not only vivacity of contemporary research but also interrelatedness of methodological changes with conceptual frameworks. It shows that it is necessary to change our traditional view of some psycholocial categories, such as perceptual thresholds or conscious-unconscious distinction.
It has just been here, but: Moving towards operational definition of consciousness in unconscious perception research
Špok, Dalibor
If we want to take unconscious perception research further beyond general methodological and philosophical discussions, towards tangible experiments, we are faced with particularly difficult problem – to bring into line third-personal approaches with subjective phenomenon, which appears to the third person only vicariously. Lots of suggestions how to define consciousness operationally in unconscious perception research in contemporary cognitive psychology have been made, as well as many critiques of such attempts. This article shows the intractability of the term consciousness for acceptable consensual operationalization. It points at the consequences emerging from objective/subjective perceptual threshold discrimination, qualitative differences paradigm, process dissociation paradigm, and direct/indirect effects paradigm.
