Legitimising the Launch of Humanitarian Intervention - A Case Study of US Politics Towards the Phenomenon of Humanitarian Intervention
Šabatová, Kateřina ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Suchanová, Angelika (referee)
This thesis examines the phenomenon of humanitarian intervention in the context of its process of legitimizing the initiation. Specifically, it focuses on the relationship of U.S. domestic politics to the legitimation of the initiation of humanitarian intervention abroad. Using three case studies of the launch of humanitarian intervention from the Middle East region, it aims to explain and answer the question of how U.S. politics influences American society's perception of the justification for the launch of humanitarian intervention abroad. The case studies analyzed are the 1958 U.S. intervention in Lebanon, the 1991 intervention in Iraq, and the unlike intervention in Syria. The Middle East cases are chosen because of the prevailing threat to civilians in the region, which has the potential to spread to other countries. Using the three approaches of humanitarianism, realpolitik, and mixed motives, it then with the use of discourse analysis evaluates the arguments and approaches of U.S. policymakers in the case studies and how they influenced the justification of the humanitarian intervention in question. The thesis puts this in context with the nature of American political culture and US foreign policy towards the Middle East. While the topic of humanitarian intervention has been explored by many...
Temporal distribution of groundwater recharge, base flow and groundwater resources in selected areas of Czech Republic, focusing on quaternary fluvial terraces: comparison of different approaches
Šabatová, Kateřina ; Bruthans, Jiří (advisor) ; Nol, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to quantify temporal distribution of groundwater recharge, baseflow and groundwater storage, mainly in quaternary fluvial terraces in the Czech Republic by different approaches, compare the outputs and assess limitations of each of the methods. The methods used are saturated zone modeling using FEFLOW program, and soil-water deficit modeling to estimate recharge and consequently calculate groundwater storage and baseflow. For this purpose, a simple soil-water deficit model was developed and proved to give reasonable estimates of recharge, despite using only 3 optimization parameters. The model is designed for unconfined aquifers with slow runoff (hydraulic pulse propagation). Calibration of the models was performed by comparison of modelled water table to water table measurements by CHMI and others. One pumping test with observation well was performed to obtain storativity of aquifer, which suggested a semi-confined regime of the aquifer, explaining the difference between storativity obtained from pumping test and from modeling. Furthermore, baseflow estimates from DPV modeling were compared to baseflow obtained from hydrograph analysis, showing reasonable similarity.
Use of water table level in wells to estimate groundwater recharge: delineation of dry periods in various areas of Czech Republic
Šabatová, Kateřina ; Bruthans, Jiří (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis addresses determination of groundwater recharge based on analysis of groundwater levels recorded in wells in time. This technique, called water table fluctuation method, is widely used abroad, but it was never implemented in the Czech Republic. It is designed for use in unconfined aquifers. By multiplying height of groundwater level rise by specific yield of the aquifer, thickness of layer of recharged groundwater can be quantified. This method can be used either for individual rainfall events, or for entire time series of groundwater level records. Its main advantage is the availability of groundwater level records. The main limitation of this method is the need of precise estimate of specific yield, which is often difficult to measure. Other sources of uncertainty include groundwater level fluctuations caused by non-recharge influences, and conditions variable in time. The practical part of this thesis gives an example of use of water table fluctuation method, using data from two wells in quaternary fluvial deposits of Elbe. I determined minimal and maximal cumulative height of groundwater level rise for the period of groundwater level recording. For well VP0673, groundwater level rise is 5,1 to 17,7 m for 52 years. For well VP1851, it is 15,6 to 38,6 m for 26 years. The limitation of...
Puppies and young dogs nutritions
Šabatová, Kateřina ; Hučko, Boris (advisor) ; Plachý, Vladimír (referee)
Puppies and young dogs nutritions Summary In this work I have attempted to summarize the most important aspects in nutrition of puppies and dogs in growth. The introduction describes the digestive tract and also the changes that have occurred due to domestication. Next is explained the importance of nutrition and water in nutritional requirements of a dog. Important are needs of nutrients and energy that are necessary to maintain the provision of the necessary vital functions. The basic components of food are proteins, saccharides, lipids, minerals and vitamins. I explain the necessary proportions, the amounts and the possible consequences of their lack in food. I focus on essential fatty acids, which in recent years are subject to frequent explorations and their pros and cons are not yet fully understood. I also mention ballast and significant specific active substances. Nutrition of pregnant and lactating females is often neglected, but for puppies it is a very crucial period. The influence of nutrition of pregnant females to the size and weight of newborn puppies has been proved. Further I deal with nutrition of puppies immediately after birth, I explain the composition of colostrum and its effect on the immunity system of the puppy. I also compare ratios of nutrients in the colostrum and milk. Further, I deal with the feeding of the individual at the time of weaning and in different growth periods. There are many possibilities of feeding puppies from after weaning until adulthood described in books. With the new knowledge about nutrition the ways of feeding our dogs have inevitably changed , but also the dogs' nutritional requirements have changed due to the conditions where and how they live and what their nutrient needs are according to their sport, breeding or other use. Currently, there is a possibility of a commercially produced complete nutritional diet or home-prepared fresh food - cooked or raw- barf. In the last chapter, I summarized possible aspects of malnutrition and its potential consequences. I described the most common problems associated with inadequate nutrition of growing dogs such as obesity as well as malnutrition, which also adversely affects the individual. The influence of proper nutrition of the puppy on its growth is clear. If we neglect the nutrition of the dog in the first two years of its life, the consequences are often irreversible.
