KUDLÁČEK, Petr
This thesis deals with the knowledge and skills of nurses in communicating with handicapped clients. The ability to communicate well is one of the basic skills of every nurse. A communication carried out well contributes to the improvement of interpersonal relationships. To make communication skills professional, nurses should combine their knowledge of general communication skills with the knowledge in the field of special pedagogy, which deals with individuals with disabilities, and employ the knowledge in communicating with disabled clients. The theoretical part consists of three main chapters. The first chapter contains characteristics of visual, auditory and physical handicaps, mental retardation and speech disorders. The second chapter deals with general principles of communication and the third is focused on the specifics of communication with handicapped clients. The bachelor thesis had two objectives. The first objective was to determine the knowledge of nurses in communicating with handicapped clients at providing nursing care in health care facilities. Two hypotheses were stated. Hypothesis 1: Nurses do not have skills in communicating with handicapped clients at providing nursing care, it was confirmed. Hypothesis 2: Nurses have the best knowledge in communicating with auditory handicapped clients at providing nursing care, it was not confirmed. To identify the knowledge of nurses, the quantitative interview method was used by means of questionnaires distributed to nurses working in medical facilities. The research respondents were 102 nurses. The results were processed into graphs. The second objective was to survey the skills of nurses in communicating with handicapped clients at providing nursing care. The research was conducted as qualitative. Two research questions were set up.1.Do nurses apply the principles of communication with handicapped clients at providing nursing care? The answers imply that nurses are more likely not to apply these principles. 2. How do handicapped clients assess the communication with nurses providing nursing care? The answers imply that clients see the nurses´ approach in a lesser extent as good, professional, more of them suppose the approach could be better. The skills of nurses were surveyed by conducting non-standardized interviews with 10 handicapped clients. The clients´ answers were processed into categorized tables. The research survey has shown that nurses do not have adequate knowledge and do not apply adequate skills. The research outcomes will be used at professional workshops, seminars and conferences and to educate nurses.
