UN Peacekeeping in the Early 1990s: Evaluation of the outcomes of second-generation operations with Chapter VII mandates

This Master's Thesis is devoted to the United Nations peacekeeping, particularly second- generation operations in the early 1990s and their evaluation. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the (lack of) success of the selected missions, which were the first examples of operations authorized under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations. The theoretical part focuses on the concept of peacekeeping itself, historical development, types of peace operations and literature review, as there are various criteria on how to evaluate peacekeeping missions. For the purpose of this thesis, the work examines three peace operations - the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), the United Nations Missions in Somalia (UNOSOM I and UNOSOM II) and the United Nations Observer Mission in Liberia (UNOMIL). The case studies provide a brief overview of the conflict, the main roots of the conflict, a response from the international community, deployment of the mission and its evaluation according to the selected framework. Furthermore, the supplementary discussion regarding the development and situation in the country in the aftermath of the mission's withdrawal enriches the case study. Bachelor thesis The peacekeeping partnership between the UN and a regional organisation: case of cooperation between UN peacekeeping operation UNOMIG and CIS peacekeeping operation CISPKF Anna Fošumpaurová Abstract The thesis deals with the United Nations' peacekeeping operations. Particular focus is dedicated to cooperation between the UN and regional organisations and what potential benefits and limitations this cooperation offers to peacekeeping. The case study aims to describe the cooperation between in parallel deployed operations of the United Nations (UNOMIG) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CISPKF) in Georgia, Abkhazia. The chronological span of the thesis is between the August 1993 and June 2009, when UN operation UNOMIG was active. The thesis firstly provides the theoretical framework of UN peacekeeping. This part lays out the legal basis for the deployment of peacekeeping operations, investigates different ways of understanding peacekeeping and its classifications, its basic principles as well as wider processes that influenced peacekeeping's nature after the end of the Cold War, including the increased participation of regional organisations. UNAMIR: A Failure of the UN?

This bachelor thesis deals with the causes, course and the subsequent evaluation in respect of the UNAMIR peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, which was established by the UN Security Council, and the main purpose of which was to monitor the proper fulfilment of the Arusha Peace Agreement. The thesis acquaints the reader with the historical context of the conflict arisen between the members of the Tutsi and Hutu tribes in Rwanda, which finally lead to genocide. It analyses the world's approach towards the fastest genocide in history, especially then by the United Nations being the principal peace creator in the world. The thesis focuses in detail on the role of the individual UN bodies, in particular of the Security Council, the Secretariat, the Secretary-General and also the Mission Commander, General Roméo Dallaire. The thesis consequently analyses the functioning of the UN as a whole, its actions in respect of preventing the conflict and the following genocide, and whether it is only the UN who deserves the blame for the failure and infringement of the Arusha Peace Agreement.

The role of international intergovernmental organizations in humanitarian crisis response: Case study

This bachelor thesis focuses on the earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010 and examines the roles of the European Union and the United Nations, two key actors in providing humanitarian aid. The aim of the thesis is to establish whether there were any differences or similarities between the EU and the UN in conducting a major relief operation in Haiti. Another goal is to examine whether the mutual cooperation between the two organizations improved the post-earthquake environment on the island. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter explains the concepts and key principles of a humanitarian crisis and humanitarian aid. The second examines how the EU and the UN delivers humanitarian aid. The third chapter reconstructs chronologically the Haiti earthquake and its aftermath and analyses how effective the EU and UN were and whether it had alleviated the suffering of the Haitian people. The chapter will also critically examine the cooperation between the EU and the UN.

Transition to Democracy in South Africa and the role of the United Nations

The apartheid regime represented the official state ideology in South Africa in the time period from 1948 to 1994. The diploma thesis deals with the issue of South Africa's transition to democracy, in particular, it focuses on the role which was played by the United Nations in this process. Its activities can be sorted out into three main phases. The first phase dated between the years 1948 -- 1966 can be distinguished mainly by the key role played by the General Assembly. The second phase which took place in the period 1967 -- 1989 was primarily focused on the international campaign against apartheid and on the adoption of economic sanctions. The final and the most recent phase occurred in the early 90s (1990 -- 1994) and could be characterized by the role of the UN as a mediator of peace negotiations.

Achieving the Millenium development goals in India

The world economy is currently going through many changes. The economic strength of developing countries has increased significantly, however the power of developed countries tends to decline. One of the emerging economies, which is gradually strengthening its position as one of the strongest players in the world, is India. Despite all the economic potential, India still ranks among the developing economies and many factors, such as poverty or hunger, keep slowing down India's growth. The biggest program, which seeks to help the developing countries, is called the Millennium Development Goals. These goals were established in 2000 by the United Nations. My bachelor's thesis aims to analyze progress in achieving the Millennium development goals in India with a focus on meeting the three specific targets related to poverty, education and women empowerment. This work captures the successes that India has already managed to reach as well as mentioning the targets that will not be met.

Ethical Aspects of the Participation Soldiers of the Czech Army in Foreign Operations

This thesis focuses on the ethical aspects of soldiers of the Army of the Czech republic participating in the foreign operations, not only in relation to the legality and legitimacy of military intervention, but also from the point of view of practical ethical questions of soldiers sent to perform tasks in these operations. The first part of this thesis introduces the Army of the Czech Republic as a tool to ensure national security and national sovereignty, built with emphasis to fulfill military traditions, virtues and professional ethics. Later, in historical and contemporary contexts summarizes the basic ethical solutions for the legitimate use of force to resolve international conflicts. The second part reflects the umanitarian and security operations taking place in the former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan as the consequences of massive human rights violations, ethnic violence and global terrorism. In the context of the ethical and Christian dimension of legitimate use of military means, summarizes the basic issues while solving security threats and enforcing national interests.

Human rights in relationship between Vatican and the United Nations.

This dissertation deals with a Catholic churches sight of nomenclature and exercise of the human rights, namely in comparison with the activity of the worldcommunity couched in the United Nations. The dissertation shows development of church attitude towards definition and nomenclature of the human rigths from the world authority, and presents answers of Catholic doctrine to current problems in this area - for example disunited definitions, difficult exactablement and other. Thesis of this dissertation should to show, that the Christianity fundamentally contributed to currently formulation of the human rights, which is holded for example in UN-documents. Also at the present time can the Catholic church enter very expertly in this discusion, videlicet thank to hundreds of years old teaching about imago Dei, common good, heritage of the 2nd Vatican council and others documents from 20th and beginning of 21st century or ivolvement of the Holy See in the United Nations or other places from world diplomacy.
