Risk preferences under acute stress
Cingl, L. ; Cahlíková, Jana
Many important decisions are made under stress and they often involve risky alternatives. There has been ample evidence that stress impairs decision making in cognitive as well as in affective domains, but still very little is known about whether individual attitudes to risk change with exposure to acute stress. To directly evaluate the causal effect of stress on risk attitudes, we adopt an experimental approach in which we randomly expose participants to a psychosocial stressor in the form of a standard laboratory stress-induction procedure: the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups. Risk preferences are elicited using an incentive compatible task, which has been previously shown to predict risk-oriented behavior out of the laboratory.

Occupational stress of special education teachers
FIKAROVÁ, Klára
The profession of special pedagogue belongs to the very high demanding occupations. These demands reduce rest time and increase risk of stress. Special pedagogue should have balanced personality equipped with capabilities and knowledge to handle the stress. The theme of this bachelor thesis is ?Professional Stress of Special Pedagogues?. The thesis focuses on special pedagogue?s personality. Also it finds main sources of loading related with his profession. Theoretical part of thesis, first chapter, involves general assumptions of associate in assisting professions as well as personal disposition of special pedagogue and his competences. Next chapter deals with institutional requirements for a job of special pedagogue, where are described facilities, in which works respondents of this research. Following chapter focuses on description workload of teachers and special pedagogues and also strategies of getting it under control. Very important part of thesis is chapter ?Sources and causes of workload in special pedagogue profession?, where are described anticipated sources of teachers and special pedagogues workload. Final chapter in particular describes burnout, because cumulated working stress, high demands and exhausting personal sources together may lead to a total exhausting. The chapter deals with prevention. The tools of prevention may be assertiveness and super vision, which respondents mentioned in research very often. General aims of research are defined as three research?s questions: 1) What special pedagogues consider for main sources workload? 2) How special pedagogues put up with workload? 3) What helps them workload to get under control? Research part of thesis is based on qualitative analysis. Semi-structured interviews, which I conducted with special pedagogues of manifold facilities and manifold phases of their careers, gave me data for research. Before interview with respondents was defined range of issues and answers were recorded. Obtained data were assessed by procedures of thematic content analysis. Of respondent withdrawals result, responsibility is the most burdening for them. Special pedagogue, provides diagnostic, has a responsibility for diagnose, which is determined to pupil. In advance, when he is also manager, he has a responsibility for his team, administration tasks and he has to know about legislation changes, which are updated very often nowadays. In contrast of teachers in common primary schools, special pedagogues workload is multiplied by disability pupils related with less feedback. Sometimes for special pedagogue is difficult to see perspective and future behind working with them. In advance he has to be more careful to avoid he fall into the stereotype. For special pedagogues is very difficult to do not bring working tasks to home. Sometimes happens, he must make aids for a next day at home. Respondents also stated, their responsibilities are very wide and general and they must do something, what is out of their responsibility. From my research results, within getting stress under control is the most important for respondents to know themselves and learn to work with themselves. Next acquirement (courses, self-study etc.) and assertive behavior helps them to achieve it. As expected they mention importance of relaxation. Somebody of them rather prefer active relax and somebody of them prefer passive relax. For most of them is also very important time spent with their families and friends.
Readiness of midwives for management of acute and critical states on labour ward
LEVECOVÁ, Štěpánka
Basic theoretical premises Currently, we are exposed to stressful situations not only in private life but also in professional life. Huge stress and stressful situations that cause acute and critical states in the field of health care may have adverse impact on the psyche and the entire human organism. At Delivery Rooms Department, all members of a medical team are daily exposed to such stress; these Bachelor theses are focused on these stressful situations and their managing in acute medicine. The theses are specialized in stressful situations being dealt by midwives working at Delivery Rooms Department who daily experience these situations. The theses are aimed at determination of perceiving and managing stressful situations in the delivery room seen in the eyes of midwives, and at the comparison of readiness of midwives to deal with acute and critical states in the delivery room in accordance with attained education, length of professional experience, and experience in the given field. Three research questions were put. Utilized methods Data collection technique in qualitative research survey utilized structured interviews. Interviewees employed their own opinions, insights, experiences, and feelings. The research included six midwives working in the delivery room of Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Hospital in Pilsen. Results The most common problem stated by the interviewed midwives was that there are certain gaps in educational systems in obstetrics related to practical training of readiness for managing stressful situations. The midwives agreed on sufficiency of overall extent of curriculum. As a problematic part they pointed out the field of theoretical education in the subjects of communication, medical communication and psychological communication where the education did not prepare them sufficiently for managing stressful situations. Furthermore, the research showed that the interviewees perceived negatively the absence of teachers of professional experience in a hospital during practice training. On the contrary, the midwives would welcome the presence of teachers at students? practice training or reduction of the number of students at shifts. The students? impossibility to record given matters in the medical documents was stated as a significant problem, since the logical view of students at a group care system at the respective department is limited. In acute and critical situation occurred in the delivery room, the midwives often reported feelings of fear, increased stress, anxiety and worries whether they will be able to manage the given situation. The midwives identically reported that they are trying to fight such stress but they all fail. Regarding this issue, they said it would be beneficial to increase the number of nursing staff and thereby prevent overstretching medical staff. One of the research questions was how midwives deal with stressful situations. The majority of midwives answered that through relaxing at home or in the company. In overall, the midwives assessed that the age of midwives and their professional experience play an important role in managing stressful situations. During their practice training, they learnt to act more promptly and prudently which has a positive effect on solving acute and critical situations in the delivery room. When querying the perception of the adaptation process, all midwives were satisfied with the length of adaptation and their midwife trainer. Regarding managing stressful situations, after termination of the adaptation process, the midwives reported this period as a time of increased strain towards their person both mentally and physically. The research survey identified a need to put more classes of theoretical education regarding communication and communication techniques.
The issue of life-threatening conditions in emergency medicine
KELBLOVÁ, Kateřina
Issues relating to life-threatening conditions in emergency medicine The purpose of this bachelor?s thesis was to determine how nurses in Intensive Care Units cope with common emergency situations. The theoretical part explains acute care, its three stages, staff/bed rate, and education and skills of the nurses. It also contains descriptions of possible acute life-threatening conditions, which may result in sudden cardiac arrest. It also describes specifics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and stress the nurses experience in intensive care. The target was achieved through four sub-goals: To determine the level of preparedness of nurses to work in such departments. To determine whether specialized study program can influence preparedness for crisis situations. To determine whether nurses change their attitudes to crisis situations after a period of practice. To determine how nurses in this field experience and cope with crisis situations. The practical part contains a qualitative research based on semi-standardized interviews held with eight nurses, and consequent content analysis accomplished through open coding. There were determined 23 categories and other sub-categories. For better clarity, data in categories 2,3,7,9,10 and 19 were put into categorization tables. The conclusion is: half of the nurses that claimed secondary school of nursing had been their only completed study program said this education prepared them inadequately for real situations. Only one nurse who had completed the specialized program felt ready for ICU. Partial preparedness was found in the nurse who had completed a higher vocational school. Preparedness can also be assessed from feelings the nurses experienced soon after they started their careers at ICU. Only one nurse felt all right; the others felt anxiety and stress. This means, nurses are not sufficiently prepared on theoretical level when they start their careers; and it results in negative feelings, eg. stress. The hypothesis No. 1 is: Nurses are insufficiently prepared on theoretical level when they start their careers. The survey showed that 6 nurses had completed specialized study program; one before she joined ICU, and one is currently in the program. All nurses who finished the study program find it helpful; only the nurse with no program completed feels she is not ready for crisis situations now. Therefore, the hypothesis No. 2 is: Specialized study program has a positive impact on how nurses handle crisis situations. Reaching the third objective, the survey looked at how nurses dealt with crisis situations at the start of their careers and at the time of the survey. Three nurses had identical answers. Two found no situation critical, and one still finds the fight for patient?s life burdensome. Two nurses replaced ?resuscitation? with ?no crisis situation?; one mentioned ?conflicts in the workplace?, and two remaining nurses described insignificant changes. Yet, all nurses but one responded that the length of their practice has positive impact on how they handle crisis situations. Even though the length brings safety and peace, it does not necessarily improve the care provided. Objective No. 4: What feelings do nurses have when they handle crisis situations? Most frequent answer was staying balanced and composed, rational thinking, and speed in decision-making process; also a certain form of stress. Interestingly, if asked about possible reasons for leaving the department, nurses mentioned general management, problems in the team and in relationships; only two nurses were fully happy with their jobs. The results and conclusions of this bachelor?s thesis may serve as inspiration to managers in nursing.

IMPACT OF WORKLOAD ON THE MENTAL STATE OF THE POLICEMEN IN SPECIAL FORCES
HOŠKOVÁ, Šárka
The thesis deals with the workload influence on the mental status of police officers in elite formations. I have focused specifically on the Rapid Deployment Unit and the Unit for the Protection of Constitutional Officials. I have been interested not only in the workload and its effects on the psyche but as well on differences between these two elite formations. Their job may appear to be pretty similar from a layman?s perspective but there are more differences between them than it seems at first glance. The purpose of this thesis is to map the workload influence and psychological burden of these two special units. My next objective is to identify the extent of stress prevention and workload compensation in terms of comprehensive health promotion within the two elite formations. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part introduces the organization and activities of both departments while defining some basic terms - stress, coping with stress and the consequences of stress such as burnout syndrome or post traumatic syndrome. The empirical part presents the methodology and organization of the research investigation which has been performed by the quantitative method of questionnaire surveys. This part will also offer an evaluation of the data and assumptions arising from the objectives along with my recommendations for practice.
