Recognition of music style from orchestral recording using Music Information Retrieval techniques

As all genres of popular music, classical music consists of many different subgenres. The aim of this work is to recognize those subgenres from orchestral recordings. It is focused on the time period from the very end of 16th century to the beginning of 20th century, which means that Baroque era, Classical era and Romantic era are researched. The Music Information Retrieval (MIR) method was used to classify chosen subgenres. In the first phase of MIR method, parameters were extracted from musical recordings and were evaluated. Only the best parameters were used as input data for machine learning classifiers, to be specific: kNN (K-Nearest Neighbor), LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis), GMM (Gaussian Mixture Models) and SVM (Support Vector Machines). In the final chapter, all the best results are summarized. According to the results, there is significant difference between the Baroque era and the other researched eras. This significant difference led to better identification of the Baroque era recordings. On the contrary, Classical era ended up to be relatively similar to Romantic era and therefore all classifiers had less success in identification of recordings from this era. The results are in line with music theory and characteristics of chosen musical eras.

Autobiographical Reflections in Jane Austen's Fictional World

This thesis deals with autobiographical reflections in selected novels of Jane Austen. The theoretical part looks into the social, historical, and cultural background in Jane Austen's lifetime. It also gives a general outline of literary genres in the late 18th and early 19th century. The practical part is focused on the analysis of various aspects in six Austen's books within the context of the available information about the writer's life. These novels are: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. This part deals with the question concerning an extent to which Austen's writing, the fictional worlds of her novels, can be attributed to the influence of her personal life and experience.

This diploma thesis deals with kitsch as a manipulative tool parasitizing in the Christian environment, at the heart of which are especially emotionally colored and often sentimental themes that directly attack the feelings of the viewer. The main content is also the definition of similarities and differences between sacred and spiritual art, holy pictures and kitsch. The aim of the thesis is to bring the concept of "Christian kitsch", to point out its power and to think about the question of whether Christianity would even be able to exist without kitsch.

Politické tendence ve vybrané romantické poezii

This thesis analyses selected poetry of English Romantic poets in terms of their political opinions. The works of various poets are scrutinised and put into the context of important political events of the period. The main topics discussed are the left-right political spectrum, the conflict between monarchism and republicanism, and the critique of institutionalised religion in how the Romantic poets perceive them. In cases where more poets show interest in the same question, their ideas are compared.

The Representation of the Svojanov castle in the 19th and 20th Century Czech Literature

The small town of Svojanov, dominated by a medieval castle, has become an inspiration for many authors, prose writers, and poets. The first references to Svojanov can be found at the time of the National Revival, and this literary tradition continues to the present time. The aim of this work is to document all available texts in which the literary image of the place was developed during the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, the genres in which the given image was applied and how it changed in the context of contemporary literary discourses (emphasis will be placed on the dominant discourses of 19th-century romanticism, parnasism, realism). The available electronic resources (Caslin catalog, Retrobi database, ) will be used for the research and the resulting text will be provided to the Svojanov castle administration.

Passages in the poem, where the topic appears are discussed and analyzed in the philosophical, social and literary context of the period (including the work of Byron himself). The conclusion sums up the main points of the bachelor thesis.

The Pianist's Feeling for Harmony in Compositions from Romanticism

This thesis explores different ways in which pianist perceive harmony in compositions of the Romantic era. I write about history of harmony and about the context of the Romantic era at the beginning of the thesis. Then I write about Chopin and about his work with a motion, a sound and harmony. The rest of the work devotes to the research. I conducted qualitative research. I interviewed four pianists, with each pianist we talked about three compositions of the Romantic era. I gave scores of the Chopin's Mazurka B minor, op. 30, no. 2 to all of them, the rest of the compositions were chosen by the pianists. They had to choose two compositions, which were created by R. Schumann, S. Rachmaninoff, or F. Liszt. I ask them questions, which realize me to find how they work with the tonality, and to find if they find some characters in keys. I wanted to find how much is important the relief for the hands for them and how much they tend to make a detailed harmonic analysis. I also tried to find if the analysis is rather intuitive or conducted process for them. Pilgrimage, countryside and pilgrim

The subject of the diploma thesis is the relationship between the artist and the landscape. The thesis focuses mainly on the tradition of pilgrimage and outlines the aspects of the landscape that the artist uses as a pilgrim in his work. The pilgrimage phenomenon is shown here through the works of Czech as well as foreign authors, from the illustrations from the travels to the performances in the landscape. In the didactic part, the tasks focused on the activities in the landscape are outlined, which reflect the perception of the landscape of the secondary school pupils. Romantic Impulses in Victorian Literature

The thesis attempts to discuss the character of late Romantic literature and art as it developed in England throughout the Victorian period. It follows the assertion made by G. Hough that it is possible to identify a continuous presence of Romantic ideas and methods in the writings of some major Victorian authors, and reflects the fact that there was actually no consensus or prevailing unequivocal view of Romanticism at that time, as is evidenced in the contradicting statements of such writers as John Ruskin and Walter Pater. The first objective of the thesis is thus to define the characteristic features of English Romanticism as they can be tracked down in the formative period of the 18th century and the time of High Romanticism of the first decades of the following century, and to see what transforming changes these characteristics underwent during the Victorian era. The sources of Romantic sensibility are located in the revolutionary role of the scientific discoveries of the 17th century and a new focus of the philosophical writings of that period, concerning mainly operations of the human mind.
