Dance floor as a safe space: interviews with women of Czech club culture

The practical bachelor's thesis Dance Floor as a Safe Space: interviews with women in Czech club culture was written as a response to the ongoing debate about safe spaces in club cultures, in which the part of society most affected by the discussion, i.e. women, the queer community and other marginalized groups, rarely get a place to express themselves. The issue is more serious in the context of club cultures and the predominantly specific rave culture because these cultures present themselves as egalitarian cultures without any marginalization based on gender, sex, race, nation, or religion. In addition to gender diversity, the thesis also deals with the issue of safe spaces within club cultures; these two issues are closely and inextricably linked. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces the concepts that relate to the topic from a historical and contemporary context, it deals with the theory of the genre of the journalistic interview, gender and gender stereotyping, safe space, and last but not least club cultures and the rave culture under study. It will also delineate the functioning and differences between the scenes of both cities, Prague and Brno. "Techno-communitas": Transformation of the Freetekno phenomenon from the perspective of Social and Cultural Anthropology

The aim of this thesis is to provide a social anthropological analysis and interpretation of the freetekno party phenomenon in the Czech Republic from synchronic and diachronic perspective. The author bases his argument on both his own field research and professional literature on the topic. An extended case method serves as a basic methodological Framework. After introduction of selected theoretical concepts (music scene, neotribes, youth subculture, rites de passage, liminality and liminoidity, spontaneous communitas and rhizom) as well as outline of the current state of research in the area of study of the freetekno party phenomenon, there is an empirical part of the thesis which consists of two main parts: the historical-ethnographic and the analytical-interpretative. The first part describes the first rave party in Great Britain, expansion of this phenomenon in continental Europe, its adoption in the Czech Republic and its gradual evolution up to the present. The following part serves as an analytical-interpretation of the above-outlined situation and a subsequent socio-anthropological interpretation. A view of the current techno scene through photojournalism

The practical part of this dissertation presents the current techno scene in Prague, Czech Republic. Techno as a relatively new genre of electronic dance music has gone through a wave of popularity in Prague over the past few years, but without the influence of established promoters. The photobook covers events organised by three collectives of young people, with a more extensive focus on one of them. They capture the euphoria of the night and subsequent morning fatigue as well as behind the scenes shots. The enclosed photo book shows photographs mainly from parties organised by Cukr. This collective of three young people has been active on Prague's scene for the past few years and its founders regularly run techno events. They change the location for each party, but organising events in places such as churches, theaters, abandoned banks or warehouses carries a risk - and sometimes things don't go according to plan. The theoretical part focuses on the history of techno, its cultural and musical context and the characteristics of nightlife photography through presenting the views of photographers such as Wolfgang Tillmans or Dave Swindells.
