The Hyphen War in the Discussions of the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic

The thesis focuses on the first months following the Velvet Revolution. In this period, the Czechoslovak political system is somewhat taken by surprise by new political agenda which becomes as important as the reconstruction of the parliamentary liberal democracy itself. National and ethnic problems emerging since the beginnings of the common state reappeared unexpectedly in the form of the Hyphen War. Besides the institutional framework within which the whole dispute took place, I analyze certain communication problems that not only influenced the form of the negotiations discussing the state name but also indicated the shape of the last years of Czecho-Slovak coexistence within one federation. The main source for analysis of the problem outlined above is the material of Společná česko-slovenská digitální parlamentní knihovna; specifically, a selection of texts composed of parliamentary debates records and stenographic records. Media analysis of Czechoslovakian Desintegration

This thesis addresses the topic of the breakup of Czechoslovakia into two independent Czech and Slovak republics at the beginning of the year 1993. With the help of secondary literature, the first section is dedicated to chronologically interpreting the history of the relationship between Czechs and Slovaks. The section also discusses the accounts of leading Czech, Slovak and other international historians relating to the end of Czechoslovakia. In the second section, the author of this thesis firstly focuses on the analysis of selected printed media, including the Czech newspapers 'Rudé právo' and 'Mladá fronta/Mladá fronta DNES', and Slovakian 'Pravda' from the months around the time of the so-called Hyphen War at the beginning of 1990. The final chapters focus on the analysis of the above-mentioned newspapers from the time of the elections to the Federal Assembly in 1992 and examine reference methods relating to the issue of the Czech- Slovak misunderstanding.

The causes of the brakup of the ČSFR

In my bachelor work I deal with breakup of Czechoslovakia in year 1992. I submit description of events which led to this dismemberment of the republic. I try to explain terms like federation, national coexistence and relation between Czech and Slovak. I concentrate on events, whose influence is not evident at first look, but they are important. I also work on evaluation of development after several years. My work is based on works of Czech and Slovak authors, Jan Rychlik mainly. The goal is to give a picture of post-revolutionary development in ČSFR and to find out the reasons of breakup of the republic.
