Regulation of insect pheromone biosynthesis
Halmová, Martina ; Pichová, Iva (advisor) ; Valterová, Irena (referee)
Pheromones are compounds emitted by insects and vertebrates that specifically modulate the behaviour of the same species. Based on the role, pheromones are classified into different types such as releaser pheromones, primer pheromones, sex pheromones, aggregation pheromones, alarm pheromones and trail pheromones. Insect pheromones are volatile substances consisting mostly of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds and isoprenoids. Pheromone biosynthesis comprises fatty acid and isoprenoid metabolic pathways. Pheromone biosynthesis must be precisely regulated since the pheromone blend consists of a mixture of compounds with defined ratios and chemical structures. The main aim of this thesis is to summarize the published information about insect pheromone biosynthesis and regulation with a focus on pheromones involved in sexual communication. Attention will also be paid to the biotechnological potential of pheromones in targeted pest management with the utilisation of enzymes present in the biosynthesis of pheromones.
The Role of Neuropeptides in Stress and in Pathophysiology of EAE
Kramáriková, Ivana ; Slanař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Slíva, Jiří (referee) ; Kmoníčková, Eva (referee)
Introduction and Aim: Neuropeptides are widely distributed group of biologically active substances and their effects depend on their activity and localization of specific receptors. The mechanism of the regulatory / modulatory effects of neuropeptides has not been fully elucidated yet, and these gaps in our knowledge make it difficult for them to influence them therapeutically. Our hypothesis was that similar to the effects of the galaninergic system on the cardiovascular system, the galaninergic system may be one of the important modulators of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and may therefore modulate the stress response or pathophysiology of selected neurological diseases. The aim of our study was to investigate presence and expression of CRH and Galanin receptors in the basal conditions and in stress in adenohypohysis and in hypophysis and in pathological conditions - in the spinal cords in the murine model of multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and determine GalR1 cellular localization (oligodendrocytes, microglia, astrocytes, ependymal cells, and endothelial cells in the capillaries). Results: The expression of all tested galaninergic peptides was determined in the adenohypophysis. It was found that the expression of the GalR2 mRNA in adenohypophysis...
Study of morphological and functional alternations of autonomic cardiac and vessels innervation and its causes in chronic diseases
Mistrová, Eliška ; Chottová Dvořáková, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Vančura, Vlastimil (referee) ; Adamcová, Michaela (referee)
Within the span of few decades, there has been a significant increase in diabetes mellitus and chronic stress in developed countries, such as the Czech Republic. These conditions have a significant negative effect on physical and mental health. Repeated and long-term exposure to raised levels of glucose, overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and the increase in plasma levels of stress hormones affects most of the organs in the body, including the heart. The cardiovascular system is regulated by a broad number of neurotransmitters, hormones and neuropeptides. Alterations in the innervation of the cardiovascular system, as a result of both diseases, can affect its physiological functions. The present thesis focuses not only on the role of the classic, but primarily on the peptidergic innervation of the heart. The aim was to contribute to the explanation of the impact of neuropeptides and their shared receptor systems on the genesis and the development of heart damage due to diabetes mellitus and/or exposure to stressors. Knowledge of the physiological characteristics of neuropeptides and their involvement in the pathogenesis of both diseases and related complications could be helpful in determining the optimal treatment method or alternatively allow us to use the cardio protective effect of...
