Changes of the form and content of photography due to growth of mobile photography and social media
Shupikova, Alina ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Štefaniková, Sandra (referee)
This thesis attempts to answer the question whether there has been a change in photography due to the growth of mobile photography and social media. The initial assumption is that the growth has influenced changes within photography's form, function and perception. In an aim to narrow this relatively broad topic, the thesis is focused on professional photojournalism and the usage of the social network Instagram as a platform for the publication of photographic reportage. The practical part of the work is a case study of a photoreportage by TIME magazine on Instagram which captured hurricane Sandy in 2012. This innovative photojournalistic method is compared with reportages done on similar events in 2005 and 2011.
Comparison of Motivation of Instagram and Polaroid Users
Vinická, Lucie ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Šlerka, Josef (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the motivation of users of Polaroid and Instagram, under the assumption that both media have nearly immediate result and may have a very similar visual stylization. The theoretical part of this thesis is devoted to a brief summary of the history of photography and philosophical opinions on that topic. It introduces Polaroid and Instagram and outlines the possible motivations of their users, using both the scientific literature, as well as personal blogs, articles and interviews. The practical part of the thesis describes the design and process of the original research, which consists of a standardized questionnaire, and its results. With its help we confirm or disprove our hypothesis.

In the first chapter the diploma thesis deals with photography as such, its transition from analog to digital age and the issue of its manipulation. The second and third chapters of this diploma thesis deal with social networks and the application of Instagram. It also deals with how the digitization process has influenced the work of today's photo reporters. The practical part of the thesis is based on two approaches - quantitative content analysis and qualitative interviews with some of the reporters. The research question is: How do some Czech photojournalists present on the Instagram social network? Quantitative content analysis responded to established hypotheses in the research question, which mainly concerned the visual aspects of Instagram accounts. Qualitative interviews gave an insight into the specific strategies that photojournalists access to the application. In the end, the...
