Resilience in first generation college students

The Bachelor thesis is dedicated to exploring resilience in first-generation college students. The aim is to affect factors contributing to the design of resilience and stress management strategies based on analysis of study experience. The theoretical part represents the situation of first-generation university students in the context of mental health. Attention is paid to resilience, protective and risk factors, and specific factors that strengthen or inhibit resilience in these students. The empirical part uses complex methodologies: individual trajectory of study, The Brief Resilience Scale, and semi-structured interviews. The research sample is composed of ten first-generation students (21-24 years) studying full-time in humanities-oriented fields in the 2nd to 5th year of the bachelor's program. Individual medallions of resilience were created from the data collected and a thematic analysis of interviews was carried out. Research shows the importance of close relationships and a supportive learning environment for the development of higher resilience, at the same time for shaping resilience in some can be beneficial, overcoming the initial adversity that leads to building adaptability to burdens.
