Ladislav Vycpálek: cantata Blessed is the Man…

The following bachelor thesis aims to explain the cantata Blessed is the Man… in the context of the contemporary cantata's production and through the reception of Ladislav Vycpálek's works. The opening chapter provides the composer's full biography with a list of his non- music activities and awards. The next part presents some testimonies of the composer's personality and a summary dealing with the acceptance of Vycpálek's works by his contemporary peers. It also takes into account the references of his music in academic publications. Afterwards, Vycpálek's own analysis of his cantatas is addressed and a general view of the Czech contemporary cantata's production is put into perspective. The actual discussion on Blessed is the Man… enriches through an interpretation of its libretto; it also stands as a summary of performances as well as its reviews. Lastly, the closing chapter states on the diverse turns in the reception of the cantata and Vycpálek's music during the 20th and 21st century; it basically looks for its own reasons and the context.

The framework consists of comprehensive dissertation intepretation and sources concerning the conductor, composer, journalist, and organizer of musical life Jaroslav Vogel (1894- 1970). Along with a comprehensive description of the artistic profile, synthesis, and attempt of a critical evaluation, the chapters are structured thematically in this work, with regard to the time sequence. The principal sources were archives and daily newspapers, in which the obtained information was verified and developed. The introductory chapter is devoted to family, education, and the first professional experience indicates the relation between his studies and the genesis of Vogel's future professional direction. The central article is part of the work of the artistically important period in the opera ensemble of the Národní divadlo moravskoslezské (National Moravian-Silesian Theatre) in Moravská Ostrava between the world wars, when its implementation and opera concerts of symphonic music reached a high artistic level, with extraordinary social and educational outreach. The view of dramaturgy and quality opera productions and concerts provide the opportunity to evaluate the significance of his organizational skills and influence on the development of Ostrava music culture. Musical criticism of Ostrava in interwar period as reflected in chosen daily press.

(in English): This thesis named Musical criticism of Ostrava in interwar period as reflected in chosen regional daily press deals with music critical reviews published in Ostrava press between the two world wars. The thesis is divided into seven chapters. The first introduces methodology procedures, aim of the thesis and survey progress. In the second chapter we describe the foundation of the first republic in Ostrava and, so called, Great Ostrava. Ostrava culture background focusing on chamber and symphonic music production and performances of the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre are dealt with in chapter three. The following chapters discuss theoretical and historic bases of music reviews and introduce four selected music critics who regularly published in popular papers. The last but not least chapter defines orientation of the selected papers - Duch času, Moravskoslezský deník and Ostrauer Zeitung. The last chapter makes the core part of the theses containing a list of reviews published annually in all the papers mentioned above. The same reviews are subsequently analysed to create the picture of music life in each period.

This thesis deals with music criticism of musicologist and music critic Mirko Očadlík (1904-1964) which he published in years 1930-1934 in the journal "Klíč" that was for the most of its existence edited by himself. Otakar Šourek (1883-1956) and his Music Critical Activities

The presented Master's thesis, titled "Otakar Šourek (1883-1956) - Music critic and writer", deals with Otakar Šourek, the author of the most extensive monograph on Antonín Dvořák to date. Šourek played a significant role in the musical life of the first Czechoslovak Republic (1918 - 1938). He worked for numerous music institutions and wrote music reviews, articles and studies for many journals and magazines, as well as books. On the basic of the description of Šourek's public work and his engagement in several music "scandals" in the first Czechoslovak Republic, the thesis strives to evaluate Šourek's position amid the musical life of the time and characterise him as a music critic. The thesis draws upon the study of source materials from Otakar Šourek's personal effects, deposited at the National Museum - Czech Museum of Music, and study of the period press.
