The Prose of Ludwig Renn: Male Characters in Political Polarization at that Time

The diploma thesis deals with the typology of male characters in Ludwig Renn's prosaic works Vor großen Wandlungen and Krieg ohne Schlacht with regard to the political polarization of the period. To describe the literary characters, it is important to be acquainted with the author's life and the literary-historical context of the period. The journey of Ludwig Renn's life, as well as the time in which he lived, influenced his work. Therefore, the first chapter is dedicated to the writer's life and the second to the literary-historical context of the time in which he published his works. The next part of the thesis focuses on the description of the literary characters in the political polarization of the period. This means that those male characters from both novels that show a political stance are selected and characterized. As the first novel is set during the Nazi rise to power and the second during the Second World War, the characters are left-leaning and anti-fascist or support Nazi ideology and politics. In addition to these two main groups, there are also characters who define themselves against one of the mentioned political orientations, as well as characters who go through various developmental vicissitudes and eventually lean towards one side. The portrayal of post-war Germany in the novel District court by Ursula Krechel

This bachelor thesis deals with the novel District court (Landgericht) by the contemporary German writer Ursula Krechel, who introduces a life story of one German family in the period from the thirties to the seventies in the 20th century in this book. The fact, that the father has a Jewish origin fatally affects the fate of all the family members. Even though the story is a fiction, its historical background is real and supported by authentic material, which the author often cites. The first part of this bachelor thesis introduces the writer, analyses the title, time, places, style of narration, language and composition. It follows a summary of the story, a characterization of the main characters and an outline of their life stories. It deals then with the important themes in the novel - problems of the partnership, collapse of the family and loss of the identity. The result of this bachelor thesis is an analysis of this literary work, which answers the research question, how the postwar Germany is portrayed in the novel District court.
