Genitive in Russian and Czech in a comparative perspective

This bachelor thesis deals with occurrences and functions of the genitive case in the Czech and Russian languages. The aim of this study is to describe the occurrence and functions of the genitive case in original Russian texts, original Czech texts and Czech translations. The main goal of this thesis is to find out whether the occurrence of the genitive case in Czech texts is influenced by the original Russian texts. The theoretical part of this thesis offers the description of the genitive case and its functions in both languages with a more detailed description of partitive and negative functions of the genitive case. The practical part of this thesis compares original Russian texts with Czech translations using parallel corpus InterCorp. Furthermore, the practical part investigates the occurrence of the genitive case in Czech texts in the SYN2020 corpus. In conclusion, the thesis gives a summary of the data obtained from the provided corpus-based analysis and some recommendations for future research. It also points out the frequency of the genitive case in original Czech texts. The main goal of this thesis is to find out whether the occurrence of the genitive case in Czech texts changes over time and whether the original Russian texts have any influence on their Czech translations. The theoretical part of this thesis offers the description of the genitive case and its functions in both languages with a more detailed description of partial and negative functions of the genitive case. The practical part of this thesis compares original Russian texts with their Czech translations using parallel corpus InterCorp. Furthermore, the practical part researches the occurrence of the genitive case in Czech texts in the SYN2020 corpus. This part also examines the genitive case in the Czech language from a diachronic perspective using diachronic corpus (diachronic part of SyD corpus).
