Gender analysis of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in selected episodes of the TV series The Surgery in the Rose Garden 2
Mašková, Martina ; Dvořáčková, Jana (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
The thesis "Gender analysis of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in selected episodes of the TV series The Surgery in the Rose Garden 2" introduces readers to problematic passages seen from a gender perspective in episodes 633 to 666 of the soap opera The Surgery in the Rose Garden 2. Research has found that doctors treat female nurses, female doctors and often female patients in a paternalistic manner (the exception are friends, such as a neighbour). The counterpart to the angry and conservative doctor Čestmír Mázl, who is stereotypically masculine (authoritative, aggressive), is the Ugandan doctor Aisha Nakabugo Kingi, who is stereotypically feminine (sensitive, empathetic). She is also progressive and is liked by patients and colleagues in the hospital. Her different ethnicity is a problem for Mázl and two other characters, but doctor Kingi disproves the racist stereotypes with her behavior and eventually befriends Mázl. Both surrogacy and home birth are presented as problematic ventures that are not recommended because they can turn out badly; in the soap opera, they only turn out well because of luck.

Macháčková, Anna ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)

An important starting point of the thesis is the belief in the existence of asymmetric power relations. The study of the literary-media text, thus, allows showing whether the power relations are strengthened or subverted through it. The main analytical category of this thesis is gender. In the theoretical-methodological part, the basic concepts and methods used during the analysis are presented. In the analytical part, the method of resistant reading and critical discourse analysis is used. The analytical part consists of fifteen selected texts. Finally, the collected data are summarised.

Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. The characters from the legends are used in context of archetypal criticism method. Considering the literature-critical perspective, the method of close reading is chosen. Gender analysis of chosen novels of Miloš Urban
Husáková, Martina ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Matonoha, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis A Gender Analysis of Selected Novels of Miloš Urban researches two concrete literary texts, novels Sedmikostelí and Lord Mord, which are analysed from gender perspective. By using two methods, feminist "resisting reading" and discursive analysis, there are uncovered various ways of female's characters construction, which are put in the social and cultural context. Theoretically the work is patterned on Judith Fetterley's concept, which was created during second wave of feminism, and it is connected to new poststructuralist and deconstructivist approaches. In this theses literature is perceived as space of impressing and encountering different discourses. Senses, categories and relations, incuding gender relations, are deconstructed in this space. This theses's core is the analysis of different categories and forms of femininity, which are reproduced in Urban's texts. It tries to show the possibility to read literary text "against the hair" and to not succumb to its interpellations. In this way it stresses personality of reading individual and his/her ability to complete/reshape text during every single process of reading and to produce new senses and categories. Keywords: feminism, gender analysis, Lord Mord, Sedmikostelí, Urban Miloš, resisting reading, women characters
Population dynamics of cushion plant Silene acaulis in the High Tatras
Krchová, Emma ; Münzbergová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Macek, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis is studying population dynamics of endangered species Silene acaulis in the High Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. Silene acaulis is a species of extreme alpine habitats creating cushions that provide a microclimate acting as a facilitator of establishment of other species in the alpine communities. This dome-like structure has one woody taproot making it easier to distinguish each individual. It is thus a perfect model species for determining the population dynamics drivers. The findings help in understanding future behaviour of the species and whole alpine ecosystems. Population data have been collected since 2013 or 2014 in two valleys in the High Tatras providing a database suitable to study various effects on species performance. Data collection includes marking, measuring, counting of flowers and capsules, viability and new seedlings recording, gender identification and comparison of vegetation structure within and in close proximity of a cushion. The data on vegetation were analysed using CCA ordination and the population data were analysed using Integral Projection Models. The results show that the breeding system of Slovak S. acaulis is gynodioecious and the gender affects the size of cushions, individuals with both female and hermaphrodite flowers being the biggest. The...

The subject of this thesis (Images of femininity and masculinity in Ještěd novels by Karolína Světlá) is a gender analysis of selected prose of Karolína Světlá, focused specifically on the works such as Vesnický román, Kříž u potoka, Frantina, Kantůrčice and Nemodlenec. The theoretical part presents basic principles, approaches and methods of the feminist literary theory including concepts focused on analyses of power and domination out of which I mostly use the work by Pierre Bourdieu. The theoretical part also contains positioning the writer's work within the literary-historical context and introducing source texts. The core of the thesis is a gender analysis based on my interpretation of texts and the method of resistant reading that concentrates on specific gender aspects in the entire series of works - the subject of my interest is creating masculinity and femininity (including gender attributes and roles or myths and archetypes), narration of the story from a gender perspective, forms of motherhood and fatherhood, topics of power, violence and sexuality. Attention is also paid to the motives of a victim or romantic love. Not only was this part greatly inspired by the work of foreign authors (Bourdieu, Beauvoir, Pratt), but also by many Czech studies and books applying approaches of the...
