Hůlka, Tomáš ; Ludvík, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kocmanová, Markéta (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the qualitative study and analysis of non-state actors during the Covid-19 pandemic. Particularly, it aims on researching the amendment of the behaviour of the gangs in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the emergence of the pandemic in Brazil for the following 6 months. The goal of the thesis is an in- depth and comprehensive analysis of the chosen actors through the lenses of theories of violent non-state actors. The analysis is established on the concept of rebelocracy defined by Anna Archona, and the shift of behaviour, leverage and autonomy of the VNSA is evaluated through the optics of the ARI framework created by Ersel Aydinli. That framework focuses on three main analytical categories- autonomy, representation, and influence. Primarily, this thesis aims to discover and reveal the reaction and adaptation of the VNSAs under the circumstances of the global pandemic, mainly on the local and regional levels. Secondly, the aim of the thesis is to contribute to and broaden the existing knowledge and understanding of the VNSAs globally and particularly in Latin America. This work offers a detailed study on the adaptation of VNSAs to the emergence of the pandemic. The thesis scrutinizes the growing legitimacy and autonomy of those actors. Moreover, the thesis provides the...
Identification of a respondent as a gang member in ISRD-2: Czech republic in the European context
Moravcová, Eva ; Buriánek, Jiří (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on problems with identification of respondent as a gang member from the standpoint of process of operationalisation, which give a selection of adequate indicators, in international survey International Self-Report Delinquency Study 2. Its objective is to propose a revision of existing definition of Eurogang for selected European countries and evaluate the possibility of creating one universal definition of a gang across Europe. The thesis is separated into three parts: theoretical, methodological and empirical. In the first part we particularly pay attention to the basic conceptions of juvenile delinquency. Subsequently, we discuss different types of definitions and the way of their formation. Finally, we mention important definitions of a gang that are often used in many surveys which focus on gangs or delinquent groups in general. In methodological part of the thesis we present the most important indicators of juvenile delinquency: official statistics and self-report studies. One of them is also the international survey ISRD-2. We concentrate not only on techniques of data collection and definition of the gang and its operationalisation according to Eurogang group, which were used in this survey, but also on basic information about sample for all analyzed countries and limit...
Berdych's Case in Czech Film: From Reality and Newspaper/TV News to Film and Film Reviews
Robotková, Martina ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Doležal, Aleš (referee)
The bachelor's thesis entitled "The Berdych case in Czech film: from reality and newspaper/TV news to film treatment to film reviews" deals with an organized criminal group that formed around David Berdych, the bouncer from Discoland Sylvia, in the early 1990s. The specificity of the Berdych's case lies in the fact that detectives from the Department for Combating Organized Crime (OBOZ) were part of the criminal gang and they were covering up the criminal activities of the gang over the years. The Berdych's gang committed kidnappings, thefts and robberies until 2004, when two detectives from OBOZ, Helena Kahnová and Tomáš Gregor, managed to uncover the gang. The thesis focuses on the media portrayal of the Berdych's case, using selected Czech news websites and news programmes. The Berdych's gang later inspired the TV Nova series Expozitura and the documentary film Zákon Helena by filmmaker Petra Nesvačilová. The thesis deals with the specifics of the TV series and the documentary film, analysis of these film works and reviews of film critics and the public. The aim of the work was to present a comprehensive picture of the Berdych's case, which has gone down in history as the biggest case of organised crime intertwined with the police in our history.

Hausvater, Ervín ; Werkman, Kateřina (advisor) ; Ludvík, Zdeněk (referee)
Violent non-state actors have represented a significant challenge for both national and international security in recent decades. One of the many countries that have experienced extensive violence perpetrated by these entities is also Kenya. Particularly armed group called Mungiki managed to become influential security, political, criminal and religious actor. Considering frequent transformations of the group making it difficult to determine what type of violent non-state actor Mungiki is, the group still represents a challenging case for researchers to fully comprehend. To contribute to the understanding of this entity and extend contemporary knowledge of violent non-state actors, this study aims to conceptualize individual phases of Mungiki development and discover mechanisms behind its recurrent metamorphoses from one type of violent actor to another. Based on the review of existing literature focused on violent non-state actors, their conceptualization, emergence, and transformations, the thesis uses a case-centric process- tracing method aimed at explaining particular outcomes of individual transformations. The study consists of an in-depth analysis of Mungiki development in the context of Kenyan security and political environment. The results indicate that Mungiki represented different types...
