Ecotourism and sustainability in protected areas of the Czech Republic

The main research objective of this master thesis paper is discovering links between ecotourism and sustainability. The paper is specifically focusing on theoretical potential of ecotourism and its ability to create conditions for long-term sustainability. The theoretical potential of ecotourism is confronted with opinion of experts within semi-structured interviews, which are analysed using framework analysis. The compatibility of ecotourism and sustainability is then closely examined in a case study of Slavkovsky les protected area. The case study shows that development of sustainability through ecotourism (or tourism) can be expected under certain conditions. The case study results also indicate that it is possible to create a simplified theoretical model, which can be applied to other suitable protected areas in the Czech Republic if appropriate modifications take place. More detailed research of individual sustainability aspects recognized in ecotourism could possibly deliver a more precise and specific model. This model could then provide a more reliable framework to estimate the potential of individual protected areas to use ecotourism as its development tool. Gifted Students in Geography

This thesis is one of the first in the Czech Republic dealing with the theme of gifted students in geography. The main aim of the thesis is to define the character of gifted grammar school student in geography. This wide and interdisciplinary theme is then divided into several scientific subthemes and questions. The basic theoretical approaches to the definition of gifted students generally and gifted students in geography are discussed in the theoretical background. The research part contains of the content evaluation of the International Geography Olympiad and the outcomes of the structured guided interviews. The content of the questions of the International Geography Olympiad is evaluated through the own constructed structured evaluation and then these questions are compared to the official Czech requirements for the graduation exam in geography. The outcomes of the guided interview are organized and interpreted using the method of the framework analysis. Despite the few problems while getting and analysing the data, there are finally defined the main characteristics of the gifted grammar school student in geography in the summary of this thesis.

Ratification Process of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

The diploma thesis deals with the ratification process of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in the Czech Republic. The proposal of ratification was denied by the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2005 and it was postponed. The debate was renewed in 2011 when the proposal was approved by both chamber of the Parliament of the Czech Republic and subsequently in May 2012 it was signed by the President of the Czech Republic. The thesis investigated different views of Members of Parliament on the ratification of the framework convention. To fulfil the aims of the thesis the Framework analysis method is used. The method reveals the competing frames in 2005 and 2011. Both periods are then compared. The author also tried to understand why the proposal in 2005 was denied and she offered one of the possible interpretations. The thesis is supplemented by chapters which describe the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the development of the ratification process. These parts use the interviews made with experts in the research area.
