Comparison of Hermeneutics and Critical Thinking in Education
Frühbauerová, Martina ; Kopecký, Martin (advisor) ; Sycha, Martin (referee)
This thesis focuses on chosen philosophical views on education. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse key ideas of the German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer in the field of philosophical hermeneutics and its implications to the theory of education (focused on the idea of critical thinking) which are then in critical aspects compared to the ideas of a Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire. The first part briefly summarizes the historical context of the philosophical hermeneutics. Then, Gadamer's key philosophical concepts are presented and their intersection with the theory of education is found in the topics of aims of education (in the sense of Bildung), the principle of preconceptions, the historicality of being, a hermeneutical circle, language, and a dialogue. In the last part of the thesis, Freire's main educational ideas are presented - including his focus on critical thinking which is also implicitly present in Gadamer's work. A comparison of these two theoretical models in chosen aspects (mainly educational aims, consciousness, and critical thinking) is also included in the last chapter. Key words: Bildung, critical thinking, dialogue, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Paulo Freire, philosophical hermeneutics, philosophy of education.
