Retrofitting Industrial Computer and Web Application Development

The bachelor's thesis deals with the reconstruction of an industrial computer and the creation of a web application with a relational database. The first part of the work summarizes the theory of industrial computers, their history and the theory of electronic waste. Subsequently, the old and new components are individually analyzed. Furthermore, the work deals with the modeling of parts and their 3D printing. The last part of the work shows the programming of a web application with a relational database for connecting to a kiosk. It describes the operation of the website, the display of data in real time and the visual interface.
Retrofitting Industrial Computer for Kiosk Application

Industrial computers are designed to last for many years. This paper deals with the case where a computer was discarded from the laboratory as non-functional and it is desirable to try to revive at least some parts. The thesis first analyzes the possibilities of rebuilding the original Lauer VS386 computer. The use of RaspberryPi is proposed in the thesis. Then thesis proposes a driver for the original matrix keyboard embedded in the front panel of the computer as well as a kiosk application for managing employee attendance to verify the functionality of the rebuild computer.
Planned Obsolescence

Planned obsolescence is the term used to describe incentives of companies to make durable goods faster obsolete. The aim of the study is to make a big picture and real situation about planned obsolescence practising and consumer disposal behaviour. First part addresses the theoretical background and provides comprehensive overview through different aspects of the good's durability issue and planned obsolescence characteristics and influences. Second part in further reference to the information provided in theoretical part examines the situation of specific durable products - laptops. From survey's results on consumer attitudes towards durability of laptops and real case study on Apple Inc. and its reliance to planned obsolescence, recommendations to the more sustainable consumption of consumer electronics are presented.
