Printed Books vs eBooks: What, Why and How Does Generation Y Read?

The aim of the thesis 'Printed Books vs. eBooks: What, Why and How Does Generation Y Read?' is to uncover what motivates a group of young people, specifically twenty students attending universities based in Prague, to choose either printed or electronic books. Furthermore, while using the qualitative method of semi-structured interview it was also the aim of this thesis not only to describe and analyse how important are the social aspects of books as well as the ways of acquiring them, but similarly to get a better understanding of how Generation Y perceives books. For this reason the conducted research could be beneficial to an academic area of interest, while correspondingly valuable for publishers, bookshops or e-reader manufacturers and their marketing strategies. Practical research is built upon a relevant theoretical basis: history of reading, characterization of printed and electronic books, together with a Czech book market summary and an introduction of Generation Y. In addition, the fourth chapter presents methods used when conducting the research, particularly Grounded Theory. However, the results of this research and their interpretations are presented in the final chapter along with respondents' descriptions, research goals and the course of interviews. E-books in special libraries - acquisition, cataloguing, services

(english) Bachelor thesis analyzes the situation of electronic books in the Czech specialized libraries. Introductory chapters are devoted to general e-book, with a focus on scientific "e-born" monographic publications. Described are processes associated with the issue of e-books and general principles of building a library collection. I tis generally mapped the situation in the Czech specialized libraries, especially in connection with the subsidy programs of the Ministry of Education to support the infrastructure of research and development (2000-2011). Mentioned the possibility of searching e-books. Through an in-depth structured interview with a professional staff of the National Technical Library and the National Library of Medicine have found details of the acquisition, cataloguing and access to electronic books and informations are then processed and compared.
Books as a medium and their role in contemporary world - paper or screen?

The purpose of this work is to analyze the newly grown phenomenon of electronic books and electronic publishing, to map consequences of e-books in relation to paper books and to describe its pros and cons. Also, this work tries to compare ebook readers presently available on Czech market, and to make a comparison of most frequently used e-book formats. The future of e-books in the Czech Republic can be inestimable, but this work gives the opinions of some Czech publishers, booksellers and authors, trying to suggest how the future may look like.
