Vitality of the current Galician language

Mgr. Lenka Picková Vitality of the current Galician language Abstract: Never in the field of human history has the dying out of languages been as intense as it is in the present day. The goal of this paper is to assess the vitality of the one of the co- official languages in Spain, the Galician language. After an indispensable definition of the social-historical context, a deep, qualitative and quantitative analysis of nine factors is performed: inter-generational language transmission, education, the absolute and relative number of speakers, trends in existing language domains and media, governmental and institutional language attitudes, and, above all, the attitudes of Galician citizens toward their languages. In the final chapter, a summary of the results of these individual factors, as well as an assessment of their influence on the vitality of the Galician language, is provided. Issues of Socioliguistics

The main subject of this thesis are issues of sociolinguistics. The first part deals with a common definition of the main terms related to this topic as a linguistic sub-field. This part also briefly describes the fields related to sociolinguistics. The next chapter applies to history. It describes how this field has developed abroad and how it was coming to our country in the following years. After that the theoretical division and characterization of subject matters follow. The following part included in the thesis describes the methods of sociolinguistics elements research, its applicability in practice and also the analysis techniques of acquired research material. The second part includes a short anonymous questionnaire looking into one particular part of all the subjects within the discipline. The results of this research are properly processed to graphs and tables.

The influence of the Galician language on the Castilian language - interferences and borrowings

As the name suggests, the main theme of the present work is the influence the Galician language has on the Spanish language system. In more detail the work also deals with specific phenomens which penetrate into the Castilian language spoken in Galicia creating a new variety of Spanish, which is typical for given region. In addition to the aforementioned aspects, we encounter in this work the matter of the influence Spanish has on Galician and we also discuss some theoretical questions. The work addresses such problems as definition of language and dialect, matters of diglossia and bilingualism and explanation of some linguistic terms, e.g. interference and integration.
Revitalization of the Regional Language in Provence by the Medium of Calandreta Schools

Revitalization of the Regional Language in Provence by the Medium of Calandreta Schools Richard Vacula (Abstract) This thesis focuses on the role of bilingual Calandreta schools in the process of maintenance and revitalisation of the regional language in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, France. It is based on empirical research undertaken in form of questionnaires and directed interviews in the place of two existing Provençal Calandretas, Gap and Orange. A sample of the local population and respondents from the area of the two schools has been included in the research. We have studied linguistic behaviour, attitudes towards regional education, and the picture of the schools and the language in question. The results suggest that the public is inclined towards the essentials of the language being taught, however, less so towards bilingual education. The results also show that the potential of the schools observed lies rather in their pedagogical methods. The strong pressure of French is noticeable even on the grounds of the schools. The use of Occitan in everyday communication situations is then somewhat rare. The regional language is noticeably associated with the school environment and is connected with specific contexts. Francophony in Tunisia

The thesis deals with the issue of French speech in Tunisia. It focuses on the French language since its introduction in the country until the present day, on the status of this language among other languages used in this Arab country and on the relationship of the locals to the language of the former colonizers. It is a sociolinguistic study, with the theoretical part showing the situation of the geography, history, culture and politics. As for the linguistic-theoretical part, it studies the French language in various areas of the social life and finally there is an assessment of specific examples of the use of French in the practical part. Within the theoretical part, we are evaluating the involvement of the International Francophone Organization in Tunisia.
