STRATEGY OF CARE WITH DEMENTIAL PROBLEMS AT A SPECIALIZED DEPARTMENT OF CARE UNIT AT KOBYLISY SENIOR HOME
LELÁKOVÁ, Dagmar
In my bachelor´s thesis I focus on the efficiency of the working methods of the personnel in the integration of activization programs and in the development of predispositions and abilities of individual clients with dementia at the Department of Specialized Care for People with Dementia, hic his a part of the Home for the Elderly, Prague-Kobylisy. In the theoretical part I explain the notion of dementia, describing the types of dementia, its manifestations, stadia and therapeutical methods. Furthermore, I describe the principles of communication with persons stricken by this disease, the evaluation of cognitive and functional abilities of afflicted people, needs of the personnel, activities and therapeutical methods used in the institutional care. The practical part relied on the qualitative research. Techniques applied for data gathering included concerned and unconcerned observation, interview and case studies. The secondary data analysis served as an auxiliary method. The central criteria applied in the selection of CASE was dementia and the terminated adaptation period. For the present research there were selected altogether 20 respondents aged 63 - 97 years afflicted by dementia of various types and in different stages of development. Out of the selected group of 20 respondents 6 persons were chosen for detailed case studies. The central objective of the work was to find out whether this group of clients with dementia can really benefit from the working methods applied at this particular specialized department. The target no. 2 was to find out whether the applied methods contribute to the longest possible preservation of self-sufficiency of clients with dementia. The target no. 3 was to convince family members to maximally collaborate with the personnel. In my view, the targets no. 1 and 3 were fully accomplished. The accomplishment of target no. 2 is relative and differs in individual CASE since the self-sufficiency of respondents gradually diminishes depending on their aging and disease advancement. Persons stricken by dementia are unable to take care of themselves, they have problems in expressing themselves, as if living in their own world, however, they do have their own needs, experiences and joys. These needs can be met by a caring family. However, the strength of the family is limited and very often it happens that the family is totally exhausted and unable to take care of the client. At that point it is necessary to provide institutional care by trained personnel that would ensure clients with dementia a kind and secure atmosphere.
Influence of the Taoist Tai Chi practice on health of seniors
ŠMEJDOVÁ, Veronika
In this thesis, titled ?The Effect of Taoist Tai Chi on the Health of Senior Citizens?, I focused on the factors influencing the physical and mental welfare of seniors who practiced Chinese health exercises - Taoist tai chi. My observations lasted seven months; they took place once a week for 45 minutes. All the clients volunteered in the exercise activities. The research group consisted of the clients of the Home for Senior Citizens and the Home with Special Regimen in Kobylisy. The theoretical part provides the explanations of old age, dementia and its manifestations, the importance of exercise for seniors, and I also introduce the Taoist Tai Chi Society. The last section is devoted to Taoist movements and their effects on the human organism. The practical part describes the individual tai chi movements, the principles of practicing Taoist tai chi and I answer research questions. The objective of the thesis was to learn whether tai chi exercise affects in some way the physical condition of the facility?s clients and whether it is beneficial for these clients. To obtain the results, I chose a qualitative research. The methods and techniques of data collection are based on participating observation, interviews and data analysis. The research group consisted of the clients of the Home for Senior Citizens and the Home with Special Regimen in Kobylisy. I focused on the ways Taoist tai chi influenced the physical and mental welfare of the clients. Semi-controlled interviews were conducted with clients without dementia. The target group consisted of six clients without dementia syndrome, and 6 seniors with the disease. The total number of 30 clients participated in the exercises. The results were processed in the form of a case study. The research shows that the seniors experienced improvements in joint and muscle mobility and the exercises usually affected their mood in a positive way. Better coordination could not be fully demonstrated for all movements. Based on the information obtained and the research results reached, the thesis will be beneficial for the Taoist Tai Chi Society and the homes for senior citizens in Kobylisy. It may also serve to organizations concerned with the use of seniors? free time, social care facilities, as well as feedback to instructors and the institutions mentioned.
Caring for Senior Citizens with Dementia
PRŮCHA, Vlastimil
The thesis deals with the manifestation and results of aging and old age from the point of view of the elderly and their experience of this stage of life and also from the viewpoint of the family and society around them. Further attention is drawn to the importance of the connection of health and social care for citizens with health problems, and the significance of social work in caring for senior citizens is emphasised. Other parts deal with the notion of dementia, with particular focus on Alzheimer{\crq}s disease. Basic problems are outlined which are connected with a citizen dealing with dementia and information is given which can help the family and all those who are involved in helping the patient. In the conclusion I evaluate the significance of permanent care and I consider the needs of non-institutional care and emphasise the importance of a caring family, humanity and understanding, which are important for the quality of life of those with dementia. This is the aim of my thesis.
Knowledge of the Family with Alzheimer´s Disease Patient about Communication Specifics
ČERNÁ, Irena
Alzheimer´s disease belongs to the most common forms of dementia. The occurence of this disease rises with increasing life expectancy of population. The more serious the disease is the lower and more difficult is the possibility of patients to communicate with other people. Close relatives usually bear this situation with difficulties. The nurse should both be involved in the treatment and education of patients´ families. The aim of this work was to find out if family members are informed on specifics concerning communication with the patients and are interested in getting more information. The first hypothesis was based on the fact that family members do not know how to communicate with their close relatives suffering from Alzheimer´s disease and the second hypothesis was that family members are interested in getting more information on mutual communication. Quantitative research methods such as questioning and questionnaires for collecting data were used to analyse the work. Ninety-six respondents were asked. All of them were family members of Alzheimer´s disease patients who have been accommodated in Prácheň sanatorium in Písek and in Loucký mlýn. All data collected were analysed and projected into graphs. As a result, the first hypothesis was rifuted and the second was proved. The conclusions of this work will be used for further education of family members of Alzheimer´s disease patients. It will be organised professional seminars in both sanatoria, in Písek and Loucký mlýn. This way I would like to contribute to better communication between patients and their families.
The role of nurse in recognition of the early stages of dementia
VELÁTOVÁ, Jana
The aim of this work was to find out whether the nurses working in the rooms of G.P. for adults can recognize signals of early stages of clients´ dementia, whether the nurses purposefully aim their effort to recognise the signals and whether the elderly people themselves are interested in such interventions. The group to be investigated was made up of a group of nurses from the G.P. rooms in the Tabor District and a group of elderly people at the age of 65 and over from the Tabor District as well. The investigation was made through quantitative research, questions; structured questions were used for the collection of data. The reason to do this work was to draw the attention to the nurses having broad possibilities to recognize the early stages of this disorder and to influence the fate of a lot of patients. The findings did not confirm the hypothesis that the nurses working in the G.P. rooms do not have possibilities to fully use their competence or to use their new knowledge of nursing to recognize symptoms of dementia of the elderly people and to broaden awareness of healthy aging. The research confirmed the second hypothesis that the nurses in the G.P. rooms do not purposefully aim their efforts to identify the early stages of dementia. The third hypothesis was confirmed; the elderly people showed their interest in the nurse{\crq}s intervention to identify the symptoms of dementia, thus confirming their reliance in nurses{\crq} expertise. All three objectives were fulfilled. At the close of the study it was pointed out that the existing approach of the nurses in the G.P. rooms to this disorder should change, the nurses should partake in using standardised less time consuming methods to test the elderly people with a higher risk of dementia, and to broaden awareness of healthy aging and all possible ways to prevent the syndrome of dementia.

Work of self-help groups of home nurses for people with Alzheimer´s disease
ŘÍHOVÁ, Jana
The current trend of general mature of population brings the broad range of serious consequences, mainly the increase of incidence and prevalence of diseases, which occur much often by the older people. From the medical and socio-economical point of view, the most serious disease is the aphreina, because the prevalence of this disease by the people older 60 years together with increasing age has the exponential character. The deterioration of the patient` s condition is also a big stress for the family. It is very difficult to accept the fact of the gross degeneration of closed person` s personality and don{\crq}t change the attitude to him. The patient is still physically present, but his mentality has been changed, he lost his personality. ``Is he, but it isn{\crq}t him anymore.{\crqq} The technology of controlled conversation, casuistic and secondary analysis of data has been used for the qualitative research. The controlled conversations was done at Senior hospice Maj. The group was consist of 5 family members of patient, who has the Alzheimer disease, 5 nurses from the department with special regime and 3 social workers. The secondary analysis of data was realized on the basis of statistics, which has been already published at the Grade theses called: ``The problems family nurses caring for the patients with Alzheimer disease.{\crqq} For this analysis, the 15 informants have been used. Within the stated aim {--} to chart the activities of self-helping groups - I have used the data published at Annual report of Czech Alzheimer` s company from 2005. I have also made uncontrolled conversation with coordinator of self-helping group at Ceske Budejovice. The results of the research showed that the biggest problem with the devotion about the patient is the psychical stress. The rest, relaxation, fun, etc. could help to feel better. If these principals are followed, the most of the problems will never occur. The help of further people is necessary to fulfill these points. The research refer to problem of nonavailability of self-helping groups, family nurses caring for the patients with Alzheimer disease within the specific region of Czech Republic and also refer to low awareness about their existence and their activities. I hope that my thesis help to home-nurses to predate the problems, which have been mentioned here {mainly the mental ones}, and also helps to existing self-helping groups.
