Lichenometry as a method and its relevance
Pelant, Filip ; Svoboda, David (advisor) ; Halda, Josef (referee)
Lichenometry is a constantly developing method (or set of methods) of relative and absolute dating of geological and anthropogenic formations, based on analysis of crustose lichens. It operates with an assumption that the larger the thallus is, the older the lichen is. But the relation between size and age (known as "growth rate") is far from being linear, and lichenometry has long attempted to find a way of describing this relation properly and universally. For this purpose, lichenometry uses direct and indirect methods - by repeated measurements of the same lichen individuals over time, or by comparison to individuals growing on substrates of known age (e.g. by using radiocarbon method). There is an ongoing controversy about aging and age calibration since the inception of the lichenometry field, but especially in this century. Strong criticism has been expressed about lichenometry, questioning the very principles of the method and consequently undermining all the results of lichenometry so far. The goal of the present bachelor thesis is to present the method with its approaches and to address the criticism. At the same time I aim to highlight recent trends in the field that seek to improve the methods toward more reliable lichenometric dating, and to encourage the use of the methods as so...

Analysis of time as a narrative category in Old Norse sagas
Králová, Kristýna ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Kadečková, Helena (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to set up characteristic attributes of saga time structure and with concern to these to show how the Old Norse people understood time. Main attention is concentrated on the time structure of the family sagas. First, it is shown the principal of the dating in saga and how it differs from the principal of dating in annal and chronicle. I proceed to deal with the most common time indications to appear in saga and their role in the storytelling. The focus point of this thesis is a comparison of narrated time and time of narration. To support this intention, I use the three concepts of Gerard Genette - duration, order and frequency. Based on the duration concept, I try to investigate why extensive time leaps abound in sagas and what on the other hand appears to have been given some extra author's attention. According to the order concept, a question is discussed to what extent the saga holds the chronological composition. Within the frequency concept, it is compared how many times an event occurs to how many times it is narrated. In the following chapters the time structure of the kings'sagas and the legendary sagas is discussed. The crucial difference between the time structure of these and the structure of family saga is established. There is a conclusion to each chapter,...
Autobiographical memories dating: the relationship between dating accuracy and type of an event
Literáková, Eva ; Bahbouh, Radvan (advisor) ; Stehlík, Luděk (referee)
In two studies focused on finding predictors of dating accuracy of autobiographical memories, events were split into categories based on respondent independent characteristics (independent on respondents' evaluation) and other, which can be ascertained from date reconstruction (event lenght, theme, temporal schemata, landmark connection, self-events and other-events). The present study is part of a larger project on which I cooperated with A. Neusar (2012) and the present results supplement his study in the fields on which he did not focus in detail or at all. The first study was focused on dating accuracy of events from 2005 to 2008 and here events connected to a landmark, self-events and extended events and also holiday and relationship events and changes were dated more accurately. Temporal schema helped with estimating the month of the year. Women were on average more accurate and specifically also in thematic categories, e.g., in estimating the date of child events. The second study was focused on dating events from recent two and half months. Events connected to a landmark and Easter, self-events and extended events were dated more accurately. Higher accuracy was found also among events connected to the leisure activities and birthday category. Women were more accurate in dating events from...
