Dandyism as a lifestyle

Theses focuses on dandyism as a lifestyle. It presents the theoretical definition of dandyism as well as its 19. century important representatives such as George Brummell, George Gordon Byron, Jules-Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly, Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, Robert de Montesquiou and Artur Breisky. Attention is paid to the characteristics of the historical period and the society in which the dandy figure appeared. Theses also focuses on the dandy figure in terms of his value orientation, appearance, behaviors, interests and time spending. Moreover, theses deals with the image of dandyism as a lifestyle in literature. More detailed attention is paid to literary works Fanfarlo, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Against Nature. In the final part of the theses is discused the topicality of dandyism in 20th and 21st century and presented three personalities whose lifestyle resonates with the principles of dandyism. The Eternal Boyhood of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic

The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work. Arthur Breisky and Oscar Wilde: Criticism, Mask, Mystification

The thesis is devoted to the following two representatives of literal decadence, Oscar Wilde, British dramatist, prose writer, poet and essayist, and Arthur Breisky, Czech prose writer, literary critic and translator. The thesis opens with providing a basic insight into the life and work of both authors. They were both influenced by decadence, which was not only an artistic trend, but also a specific spirit of the time that was reflected in the psychological and social roots and opinions of both authors. The thesis works with the basic assumption that the Czech decadent Breisky was significantly influenced by Wilde in his opinions and activities. The thesis sets up three areas to explore that mingle and influence each other: criticism, masque and mystification. The main similarities between Wilde and Breisky are analyzed in the thesis. Based on the comparison of individual motives, it is possible to trace how Breisky builds on Wilde's ideas and what, on the other hand, he invents newly or differently. Apart from the comparison of both authors, the thesis also provides a comprehensive overview of Breisky's opinions on literature and art at the theoretical level. Aesthetics of Camp

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of camp and its manifestations in modern western culture. The aim of this thesis is to indentify the signifiant features typical for camp as an aesthetic stance and for camp as an object. Attention is paid to the relationship of the camp and kitsch, and their differences and similarities. The relationship of camp to the high and low art or dandyism is also examined. The main text used for this thesis is an essay "Notes on Camp" by Susan Sontag.
