Factors influencing the age of introduction of complementary foods in the Czech Republic

Introduction and objectives: Health organizations agree, that the introduction of complementary foods should take place at the earliest after the end of the 4th month (17th week) and no later than the end of the 6th month (26th week). The age of the child, at which mothers decide to start with the first complementary foods, can be influenced by many factors related to the mother or the child. The aim of this study is to identify these factors and to research their influence on the process of introducing complementary foods in the Czech Republic. Methods: The data processed/presented in this paper were obtained from 2206 mothers from the Czech Republic who participated in an anonymous online questionnaire survey conducted during January 2024. The individual factors were determined based on their proven influence on the age of introduction of complementary foods in previous studies. The relationship between the individual factors and the age of introduction of complementary foods was statistically evaluated using the Chi-squared test of independence of contingency table at a significance level of α = 0,05. The aim of this work is to evaluate breastfeeding along with the timing of complementary feeding of infants as a possible way of food allergy prevention. The first part of the thesis deals with the human immune system development and the factors which play a crucial role in this problematics. The next part is dedicated to breastfeeding and it describes the composition of breast milk and its immunological importance. The last part deals with the patophysiology of food allergies and food intolerance.
Physiological nutrition of infants

This bachelor thesis deals with physiological nutrition of infants. It is divided into two parts. The theoretical part describes facts about newborn, infant and their needs. Then pursues basic physiological parameters of the newborn and the ways of assessment of nutrition status. The thesis discusses all aspects of breastfeeding, infant milk substitutes and complementary feeding. Also speaks about risks of alternative nutrition, obesity and eating disorders. The practical part finds out differences in growth charts of hundred children in the first year of their life. The half of the children are breastfed, the second half is artificially fed. This work is originated quantitative data analysis. The graphic processing shows that breastfed children have a lower body mass index and lower average weight gain. My bachelor thesis focuses on postnatal nutrition within the first year. The work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part focuses on the different nutritional values of milk nutrition, breast feeding, and its positive impact on child development, moreover on the issue of alternative milk substitutes and the introduction of various kinds of complementary feeding. The practical part is devoted to the application of theoretical knowledge into practice. I am evaluating and processing questionnaire that I created for this purpose. I identify the duration of breastfeeding in particular, introduction of various baby foods and a selection of infant milk substitutes.
