Dispute over the deployment of German military forces in the First Gulf War

The First Gulf War initiated the re-opening of the internal political debate in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) about the deployment of armed forces abroad and represented a culmination point that challenged the existing course of German foreign and security policy. This bachelor thesis reconstructs the process of German government decision making, concerning the form of the German contribution to the solution of the Iraqi-Kuwait crisis using the theoretical concept of two-level game introduced by Robert Putnam. The thesis focuses on the following questions: which factors and to what extent formed the final German position and how did the final decision influence the international position of Germany and the course of its foreign and security policy? Finding itself in a difficult political situation at the time (unification process), the FRG decided, in spite of its foreign legal commitments and the expectations of international allies, to pursue a strategy of military abstention and supported the operation through financial and material means. German international development cooperation in Latin America

The bachelor thesis discusses the German development policy in Latin America between years 1990 and 2011. The region is not considered to be a part of German key strategic interests. However, the Federal republic plays a role of a "global donor" and supports the countries of Latin America significantly and carries out major development projects there. The thesis will firstly present the basic political context, describe the mutual relationships between Germany and Latin America and analyse key interests that are the base for the development cooperation. In the following part, the concept of a civilian power will be applied to the German development policy in the region to observe to which amount the character of the cooperation corresponds with the basic attributes of foreign policy of a normative-oriented civilian power as an ideal type. Statements of the executive representatives, government policy papers, statistical data and opinions of the academic sectors undergo the analysis.The aim of this paper is to present the development policy with the monitored region in its complexity and analyse which meanings do the German actors assign to the examined reality.

German-Austrian Relations 1998 - 2005

This master thesis is dealing with the German-Austrian relations between 1998 and 2005 with an emphasis on a period of sanctions against Austria in 2000 in which Germany participated. The analysis was done by using the concept of civilian power to analyze the German foreign policy and by using the theory of asymmetrical dyads to analyze the German-Austrian relations. Outside the above mentioned topic and period of time this thesis concerns itself also briefly with the history of the German-Austrian relations before 1998 and the Austrian political party FPÖ. Due to the thematic limitations this thesis doesn't cover the domestic policy of both countries during that era or the German-Austrian Relations outside the designed period of time.

EU as power for peace? Mission EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina

This paper presents the role theory and the role conception power for peace which was created for the European Union on the basis of its values, norms and rules. Five criteria that define power for peace were applied to the peace mission EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After verification of all criteria it was proved that the EU has acted as power for peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it has therefore fulfilled its role conception.
