"Gentlemen, please, take of your hats": Methods of dating and interpretation of photographies from years 1850–1918 through historical mens fashion

„GENTLEMEN, PLEASE, TAKE OFF YOUR HATS“ – Methods of dating and interpretation of photographies from years 1850-1918 through historical mens fashion is compacted material for professional description of historical photographic material from noblemens collection funds based on basic knowledge of mens and partially child fashion, and related clothing accessories. In its entirety it brings a large amount of knowledge from history of the then mens fashion, which was after the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian empire overlooked or presented only in narrowly specialized sections, e.g. in the military section. A large part of this publication is based not only on the knowledge of description of mens clothing, but mainly of headwear. It is this clothing accessory that is pivotal to the observed era, and with a closer look, it can help accurately date and describe people captured on historical photographs. It is primarily meant for the specialized staff of memory institutions of Czech Republic, who deal with these given issues. At the same though, it can allow curators and owners of historical funds a way to describe collections of exhibits that are kept in their collection funds.

Czech Lexicography of the 15th Century

Mgr. Kateřina Voleková Česká lexikografie 15. století Czech Lexicography of the 15th Century Abstract The thesis deals with Czech medieval lexicography. Based on research into rich manuscript material totalling over 350 items, it describes the development of Czech lexicography from Czech glosses in foreign-language texts and first Latin-Czech glossaries to the flourishing Czech lexicography of the 15th century covering both Latin-Czech, Czech-Latin and multilingual lexicographical works and also infrequently attested Czech monolingual dictionaries. The high number of lexicographical works is divided according to formal and content criteria. With respect to form and macrostructure we discern Czech glosses in Latin and Latin-German glossaries, a bilingual glossaries with Czech as one of the languages, alphabetaries and nomenclators and glossaries lacking an ordering criterion. With respect to the content we distinguish large dictionaries covering as many lexical items as possible on one hand and short glossaries covering only a narrowly delimited part of vocabulary on the other hand. Manžel běžel na úřady. Calques in the speech of the first Czech immigrant generation in the USA

This article is concerned with the first Czech immigrant generation in the USA and the influence of American English on their Czech. The first generation can usually speak their mother tongue very well. However, long-term contact with American English led to changes in the Czech language. In this paper, the analysis is oriented to the calques which are usually considered (by immigrants) to be the “correct” Czech words, as opposed to, for example, loanwords.

Lexical specificities of French legal language in the field of civil justice and the problematic of their translation into Czech language

Bachelor thesis covers the parsing and translation issues of lexical specifics of french legal language, concretely in the area of civil justice. Its purpose is to map given problematics both theoretically and practically. The thesis is composed of two major parts. The first one, theoretical, uses the expert sources to define basic terms and deal with parsing, attributes and lexical characteristic of legal language. Theoretical part also specifies translations?methods used in translations of juristic texts. Practical part utilizes content analysis method to describe the most interesting terms employed in civil justice. Supplement to this part is a resumé in French and French-Czech glossary.
