The Impact of the Murder of Alexander Litvinenko on British Policy towards Russia

The bachelor thesis titled "The Impact of the Murder of Alexander Litvinenko on British Policy towards Russia" deals with the issue of British policy towards Russia in response to the murder of Alexander Litvinenko, which significantly cooled bilateral relations. The thesis focuses on the analysis of the security and diplomatic actions of the British government and their connection with economic strategies, which is interpreted through the theoretical framework of the thesis - the theory of Canadian political scientist Kalevi Holsti. Holsti's theory, which discusses the interaction of states' security and economic measures in the face of external threats, provides a guide to understanding the shape of the British response. To illuminate the context, an overview of the British policy towards Russia prior to the event is provided, as well as a detailed account of the life and tragic death of Alexander Litvinenko. The period of around one and a half year after the murder is examined to avoid the influence of other events on British policy. British policy towards the Soviet Union during Winston Churchill's second term as Prime Minister

The bachelor thesis titled "British policy towards the Soviet Union during Winston Churchill's second term as Prime Minister" deals with the issue of British policy towards the Soviet Union which was influenced by the changing attitude of the most prominent British statesman of the first half of the 20th century, Winston Churchill. The thesis focuses on the beginnings of the détente policy caused by Stalin's death in 1953. In order to shed light on the historical context, it was also necessary to make a recapitulation of the policy pursued by the previous Labour government which was led by Clement Attlee. The examined period of 1951-1955 is characterised by the diplomatic efforts to initiate dialogue between the Western and Eastern blocs. The thesis further focuses on international conferences that aimed to reduce tensions and the arm race in order to eliminate the possibility of a nuclear conflict between the superpowers. Based on the studied secondary literature and available primary sources, the result of the thesis is the determination of the influence of détente on British policy towards the USSR and the evaluation of Churchill's attempts to engage in dialogue with the Eastern bloc.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to find the cause of success of the British Labour Party in general election in 1997. In addition to examining the assumptions for this victory the work also focuses on the search for the roots and the beginning of an ideological transformation "old" Labour Party into "new" called New Labour under Tony Blair in years 1994-1997. This paper applies case study metodology. In conclusion identifies the key moments of transformation and raises the question whether and to what extent this success can be generalized and applied to other social democratic parties.

The thesis contains information not only about the Robert Maxwell's personality but also about the historical context his times in Great Britain and focuses on the historical aspect of the media field, business and politics.

The rise and fall of New Labour : a political ideology or just a trend?

The Diploma thesis "The Rise and Fall of New Labour: A Political Ideology or a Just a Trend?" focuses on the analysis of a British political course called New Labour. The research focuses on internal and external factors that had allowed this ideology to dominate the British politics over the last 13 years under the established brand of Labour Party. This thesis constitutes a comparative case study, based on the theoretical assumption of time, as well as economic and social constrains of the New Labour phenomenon. The circumstances which back in 1997 allowed the election triumph of New Labour, are often similar to those, that let to its decline a decade later, amid the new social, economic and political climate, caused its decline. This hypothesis is confronted with a secondary research based on the evaluation of broader economic, social and political influences. While the study has proved the validity of the New Labour idea in times of favorable economic and political circumstances, such as the combination of divided opposition and economic boom, it has also shown its failure in the times of economic downturn.
