Contrastive Analysis: Use of Attribute in Danish and Czech Bc. Anna Nedělčevová Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of the use of the attribute in Czech and Danish. The first part of the Thesis contains a brief overview of how the attribute is used in the grammatical systems of both languages. In the following part, the reader is acquainted with the analysis of excerpts from three books translated from Czech to Danish and three translated vice versa. The analysis examines the position and way of expression of the attribute in the translation and the frequency and complexity in the original texts. The used data were analyzed using contingency tables. The analysis confirmed most of the assumptions obtained from the theoretical part - more frequent use of compounds in Danish, occasional replacement of Czech genitive attributes by Danish attributes formed by prepositional phrases, and more common use of postpositive adjectives in Czech. However, the findings obtained from the analysis also revealed other tendencies in translation, e.g., the replacement of Danish adjective clauses with postpositive adjectives in Czech. Keywords attribute, Danish, Czech, translation, contrastive analysis, adjectives, compound
