Czechoslovak action art and performance between 1963 and 1989: was the artistic freedom restricted by the State security?

Práce zkoumá přístup v omezování svobody umělecké tvorby Státní bezpečnosti v případě československých akčních umělců. Zabývá se obdobím mezi lety 1963 až do tzv. sametové revoluce v roce 1989. Na konkrétních reprezentativních příkladech zkoumá intenzitu a vývoj omezování svobody tvorby ze strany Státní bezpečnosti. Ze sta zkoumaných umělců jsem vybrala ty nejsledovanější Státní policií a po vyhodnocení zúžené skupiny umělců jsem vybrala čtyři umělce, kteří tvoří reprezentativní vzorek zahrnující území Česka i Slovenska, období tvorby a závažnost omezení. Vybranými akčními umělci jsou Eugen Brikcius, Milan Knížák, Alex Mlynárčik a Tomáš Ruller. Ve zvláštní kapitole rozebírám rok 1989, který se svým charakterem liší od předchozích let. Fakt, že byla svoboda tvorby akčních umělců v Českoslovenku omezována je nediskutabilní. Hlavní otázkou výzkumu zůstává, zda se omezování tvůrčí svobody akčních umělců ze strany Státní bezpečnosti lišilo v průběhu 60., 70. a 80. let, případně jestli se lišilo a jak v Česku a na Slovensku. Intenzitu omezování definuji vězněním, omezením cestování, pokutou, žádostí o spolupráci se Státní bezpečností nebo například nemožností získat vzdělání či práci v závislosti na umělecké tvorbě.

The Portrayal of Women and Men in Charles Bukowski's Fiction

The subject of the present thesis is the author Charles Bukowski and as the title suggests his portrayal of women and men in the chosen works. This thesis strives to avoid presumption of Bukowski's personal sentiments and views, and instead focuses on the written word itself, namely on the Notes of a Dirty Old Man and Women. By choosing Notes of a Dirty Old Man and Women we will be able to discuss changes in Bukowski's attitudes throughout a set period of his life, during a time when attitudes towards women were changing. The pillars of the thesis are language and sexuality. Hence, this thesis challenges the image of crude and basic language not being worthy of literary acceptance. This thesis will show that such language was chosen deliberately. It will be explained, for example, that one of Bukowski's reasons for doing so, was to better reflect the minds of his protagonists. Similarly, sexuality, as one of the most discussed and criticised of Bukowski's themes will also be analysed. The object of this academic discussion is to show how Bukowski liberated the subject of sexuality by using humour and irony in his writing. Consequently, the thesis will also contextualise Bukowski in terms of time, place and personal development, in order to show progress and development in his work. It will be shown...

Miroslav Macháček's Stage Work at the National Theater in the 70's and 80's

The master thesis attempts to characterise the staging poetics of Miroslav Macháček, one of the most remarkable Czech theatre directors of the second half of the 20th century. Based on his stage works in the 70's and 80's at the National Theater, the author of this thesis attempts to make a reconstruction of all his productions of that period; and thus the detailed analysis of the more significant productions characteristic to the director's style is provided. In order to define the stagings, the author bases her research upon archival theater reviews and studies in particular periodicals, photographical materials from the productions and in some cases also audiovisual recordings. Furthermore, other sources include the director's correspondence, notes about his work and the memories of his contemporary witnesses. The thesis also focuses on the historical context and the conditions at the National Theater of that particular time, which influenced Macháček's activity there.
