Role of DAAD in German Foreign Cultural Policy after 1990

The thesis examines in detail the role of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in German foreign cultural policy. It traces the development of the DAAD in response to political and social changes and analyses it in two key periods: 1990-1999 and 2000-2022. The year 2000, when the new concept of German foreign cultural policy was presented, is considered a turning point that influenced the future direction of Germany. The study examines how the DAAD promotes cultural and academic exchange between Germany and other countries, including its focus on initiatives in Czechia. Through historical perspectives and the gradual establishment of DAAD programs, the thesis seeks to provide the transformation of this organization and highlight its key importance in promoting international mobility of students and scholars. It also analyses the challenges facing the organisation, including the declining interest in learning German as a foreign language, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The thesis therefore focuses on the organisation's adaptation to these new conditions and describes the measures the organisation took to mitigate their impact.
